HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Osteosarcoma, which is also called osteogenic sarcoma, is the most common type of cancer that starts in the bones; and

WHEREAS, The cancer cells in these tumors look like early forms of bone cells that normally help make new bone tissue, but the bone tissue in an osteosarcoma is not as strong as that in normal bones; and

WHEREAS, Most osteosarcomas occur in children, teens, and young adults; and

WHEREAS, Although teens are the most commonly affected age group, osteosarcoma can develop at any age; and

WHEREAS, In children, teens, and young adults, osteosarcoma usually starts in areas where the bone is growing quickly, such as near the ends of the leg or arm bones; and

WHEREAS, Many symptoms of osteosarcoma can be easily ignored as normal growing pains in children, which makes regular check-ups and referrals to specialists extremely important; and

WHEREAS, Prompt diagnosis and identification of cancer is crucial to successful treatment; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare September 15, 2023 as "Osteosarcoma Awareness Day" in the State of Illinois; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we urge the federal government to allocate more funding toward finding a cure for osteosarcoma; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be delivered to the President of the United States, the U.S. Senate Majority Leader, the U.S. Senate Minority Leader, the U.S. Speaker of the House, the U.S. House of Representatives Minority Leader, and all members of the Illinois Congressional Delegation.
