HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate Principal Karen Calloway of Kenwood Academy on the occasion of her receiving the prestigious Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Leadership; and

WHEREAS, The Golden Apple Awards, sponsored by the Golden Apple Foundation, honor excellence in teaching and school leadership; and

WHEREAS, Karen Calloway was one of two school principals selected to receive The Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Leadership in the State of Illinois out of 130 nominations; her award includes a $5,000 award for her use and an additional $5,000 for a project of her choosing to benefit Kenwood Academy; and

WHEREAS, Karen Calloway, a lifelong resident of Chicago's south side, graduated from Lindblom Technical High School; she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Lewis University; she continued her studies at Lewis University and now holds master's degrees in both psychology and education administration; and

WHEREAS, Karen Calloway has worked at Kenwood Academy for more than two decades, beginning as a guidance counselor in 2001; she held several other positions at the school, including assistant principal, before accepting the position of principal in July 2018; and

WHEREAS, During her tenure at Kenwood Academy, Karen Calloway has led her team in building systems and processes to have a nurturing and encouraging student culture; she has also been responsible for building and expanding the Kenwood Academy National College Tour Calendar, exposing students to college and universities throughout the country; and

WHEREAS, Karen Calloway has been nominated and received several awards for her work in education, including being named a Drive Award finalist, a 2005 Suave Award finalist, a 2006 Suave Award winner, the 2011 Alpha Kappa Alpha Educator of the Year, and the 2012 Distinguished Educator by Lewis University; and

WHEREAS, Karen Calloway possesses an innate and genuine desire to nurture, encourage, and build student leaders; she is extremely passionate about developing students, motivating them both to discover their value and to claim their place as college-bound scholars; and

WHEREAS, Karen Calloway has stated her intent to continue working at Kenwood Academy; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Principal Karen Calloway on receiving the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Leadership, and we commend her for her dedication to the students, community, and staff; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Karen Calloway as an expression of our esteem and respect.
