HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate the Village of Lemont on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of its founding; and

WHEREAS, Lemont was established in the year 1836, making it one of the oldest and most unique communities in northeastern Illinois; and

WHEREAS, Through the next several years, the I&M Canal was completed, the quarry industry grew steadily and dominated the economy of Lemont, churches and buildings were built of "Athens Marble", the Chicago & Alton Railroad was completed, and the population continued to grow; and

WHEREAS, On June 9, 1873, an election was held for the purpose of deciding whether the citizens residing within the Lemont territory should organize as a village under an act of legislature to provide for the incorporation of cities an villages; the results of such election were 243 for village organization and none against it; and

WHEREAS, Between 1890 and 1900, the Chicago Sanitary & Ship Canal was built and boosted Lemont's population; the village continued to prosper, families claimed land, new businesses opened, and the town expanded; and

WHEREAS, Through hard work and cooperation, pioneers built Lemont, and their spirit remains part of the fabric of the village as it progresses toward its future with a commitment to preserving its heritage while fostering growth and embracing its strong community spirit; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the Village of Lemont on the 150th anniversary of its founding, and we wish the citizens many more wonderful years; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the mayor of Lemont as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
