| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate the Village of Lemont on |
| 4 | | the occasion of the 150th anniversary of its founding; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Lemont was established in the year 1836, making |
| 6 | | it one of the oldest and most unique communities in |
| 7 | | northeastern Illinois; and
|
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Through the next several years, the I&M Canal was |
| 9 | | completed, the quarry industry grew steadily and dominated the |
| 10 | | economy of Lemont, churches and buildings were built of |
| 11 | | "Athens Marble", the Chicago & Alton Railroad was completed, |
| 12 | | and the population continued to grow; and
|
| 13 | | WHEREAS, On June 9, 1873, an election was held for the |
| 14 | | purpose of deciding whether the citizens residing within the |
| 15 | | Lemont territory should organize as a village under an act of |
| 16 | | legislature to provide for the incorporation of cities an |
| 17 | | villages; the results of such election were 243 for village |
| 18 | | organization and none against it; and
|
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Between 1890 and 1900, the Chicago Sanitary & |
| 20 | | Ship Canal was built and boosted Lemont's population; the |
| 21 | | village continued to prosper, families claimed land, new |
