2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate International Association |
4 | | of Heat & Frost Insulators & Allied Workers #1 (Pipe Coverers' |
5 | | Union No. 1) on the occasion of its 125th anniversary; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Pipe Coverers' Union No. 1 has been a leader in |
7 | | the mechanical insulation industry for over a century, with |
8 | | the organization currently representing 350 certified members |
9 | | in western Illinois and eastern Missouri who are trained in |
10 | | the industry's latest insulation and safety standards; the |
11 | | organization also has 33 signatory contractors, covering 37 |
12 | | counties in Illinois and 36 counties in Missouri, who provide |
13 | | the safest and most productive workforce in the bi-state area; |
14 | | and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, On December 20, 1898, Pipe Coverers' Union No. 1 |
16 | | was first organized in St. Louis, Missouri in response to |
17 | | insulation workers enduring low wages, poor working |
18 | | conditions, and no job security; in the subsequent years, the |
19 | | organization effectively served the purpose for which it was |
20 | | founded, improving the future of its members, thus providing |
21 | | inspiration for pipe coverers in other parts of the country; |

1 | | WHEREAS, Pipe Coverers' Union No. 1 held its inaugural |
2 | | national convention in St. Louis on July 7, 1903, which was |
3 | | attended by delegates from local unions in Cleveland, Ohio, |
4 | | Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Chicago, Illinois, Boston, |
5 | | Massachusetts, San Francisco, California, and Detroit, |
6 | | Michigan and resulted in the adoption of the organization's |
7 | | constitution and bylaws; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, At its annual convention in 1904, Pipe Coverers' |
9 | | Union No. 1 adopted the official name of the National |
10 | | Association of Heat, Frost and General Insulators and Asbestos |
11 | | Workers of America; the organization also received recognition |
12 | | as a national union upon obtaining an official charter from |
13 | | the American Federation of Labor on September 22, 1904; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, In 1910, Pipe Coverers' Union No. 1 was joined by |
15 | | several Canadian local unions, leading the organization to |
16 | | apply for a new charter as an international union and to change |
17 | | its name to the International Association of Heat & Frost |
18 | | Insulators and Asbestos Workers; and
|
19 | | WHEREAS, Today, Pipe Coverers' Union No. 1 goes by the |
20 | | official title of International Association of Heat & Frost |
21 | | Insulators & Allied Workers #1; and
|
22 | | WHEREAS, Through endurance and relentless pursuit for a |

1 | | higher standard of living and better benefits and conditions, |
2 | | Pipe Coverers' Union No. 1 has endured and overcome a great |
3 | | deal in its 125-year history, permitting today's members to |
4 | | enjoy a safe workplace, an excellent hourly wage, superior |
5 | | health and welfare benefits, and a generous pension; |
6 | | therefore, be it

7 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
8 | | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
9 | | we congratulate International Association of Heat & Frost |
10 | | Insulators & Allied Workers #1 (Pipe Coverers' Union No. 1) on |
11 | | its 125th anniversary; and be it further

12 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
13 | | presented to Pipe Coverers' Union No. 1 as an expression of our |
14 | | esteem and respect.
