HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3Representatives wish to congratulate the Affy Tapple company 
4on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of its founding; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Edna Kastrup created what could be considered the 
6first caramel apple in 1948; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The Kastrup family opened the Affy Tapple store 
8on North Clark next to the Adelphi Theater in 1952, using a 
9name that began with "a" so it would appear early in the phone 
10book; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Local schools started Affy Tapple Day fundraisers 
12in 1960; Affy Tapples began being sold at local Jewel and 
13Walgreens stores in 1980; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The Kastrup family sold the company to private 
15investors in 1995, and Affy Tapple moved from Rogers Park to a 
16state-of-the-art facility in Niles in 2000; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Brandon Beavers and his mother, Josephine, 
18acquired the company in 2017, which was an easy decision for 
19them as Affy Tapple caramel apples have long been a cherished 
20treat within their family; and

1    WHEREAS, Today, the Affy Tapple factory produces a 350,000 
2apples daily, requiring 20 tons of caramel and nine-million 
3peanuts; the operation churns out nine apples every second; 
4and
 
5    WHEREAS, Over the years, Affy Tapple caramel apples have 
6delighted millions of Chicagoans, and when the leaves start to 
7turn to color of caramel and the air is as crisp as an apple, 
8everyone knows it is fall in Chicago, or as it is known to many 
9"caramel apple season"; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE 
11HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 
12we congratulate the Affy Tapple company on its 75th 
13anniversary, and we wish it many more wonderful years; and be 
14it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
16presented to the Affy Tapple company as a symbol of our respect 
17and esteem.
