|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate Mujeres Latinas en Acción |
4 | | on the 50th anniversary of its founding; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Mujeres Latinas en Acción was founded in 1973 by |
6 | | the late Maria Mangual and a group of dedicated women as a |
7 | | shelter for young women escaping violence in the Pilsen |
8 | | community, the first program of its kind; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, In 1982, Mujeres Latinas en Acción established |
10 | | the Healing and Prevention of Domestic Violence program, |
11 | | providing a culturally competent model of services for |
12 | | survivors of domestic violence; and |
13 | | WHEREAS, In 1987, Mujeres Latinas en Acción created the |
14 | | Parent Support Program to address the needs of families that |
15 | | were in the child welfare system, including providing a |
16 | | support group for parenting skills; and |
17 | | WHEREAS, In 1988, Mujeres Latinas en Acción continued |
18 | | building upon its history of collective leadership by |
19 | | developing the Latina Leadership Program, which has trained |
20 | | and graduated hundreds of women community leaders and |
21 | | organizers; and |

1 | | WHEREAS, In 1992, Mujeres Latinas en Acción began its |
2 | | Sexual Assault Program, providing culturally and |
3 | | linguistically competent therapy, case management, and |
4 | | counseling; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, In 2002, Mujeres Latinas en Acción expanded its |
6 | | family support services in partnership with the Illinois |
7 | | Department of Family Support Services to create the only free |
8 | | Supervised Visitation and Safe Exchange program designed |
9 | | specifically for Spanish speaking, low-income families; and |
10 | | WHEREAS, In 2009, Mujeres Latinas en Acción established |
11 | | the Community Engagement and Mobilization Program to bring the |
12 | | voice of Latina immigrants and survivors of trauma to the work |
13 | | of immigrant and women's coalitions; and |
14 | | WHEREAS, In 2012, Mujeres Latinas en Acción established |
15 | | Empresarias del Futuro, a program to help Latinas create |
16 | | businesses and unlock their entrepreneurial potential; and
|
17 | | WHEREAS, That same year, Mujeres Latinas en Acción |
18 | | received funding and created a national initiative to assist |
19 | | and advise organizations around the country to increase |
20 | | programming and capacity to help address and prevent |
21 | | gender-based violence in Latina communities; and

1 | | WHEREAS, Mujeres Latinas en Acción's services have |
2 | | expanded beyond Pilsen to sites in Brighton Park and North |
3 | | Riverside; therefore, be it
|
4 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
5 | | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
6 | | we congratulate Mujeres Latinas en Acción on its 50th |
7 | | anniversary of providing innovative and empowering services |
8 | | for Latinas; and be it further

9 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
10 | | presented to Mujeres Latinas En Acción as a symbol of our |
11 | | respect and esteem.
