1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, A trisomy is a type of polysomy in which there are
3 | three instances of a particular chromosome, instead of the
4 | normal two; a trisomy is a type of aneuploidy, an abnormal
5 | number of chromosomes; and
6 | WHEREAS, Most organisms have pairs of chromosomes in each
7 | cell, with one chromosome inherited from each parent; in such
8 | organisms, a process called meiosis creates cells called
9 | gametes that have only one set of chromosomes; and
10 | WHEREAS, The number of chromosomes is different for
11 | different species; humans have 46 chromosomes, or 23 pairs of
12 | chromosomes, and human gametes have only 23 chromosomes; and
13 | WHEREAS, If the chromosome pairs fail to separate properly
14 | during cell division, the egg or sperm may end up with a second
15 | copy of one of the chromosomes; if such a gamete results in
16 | fertilization and an embryo, the resulting embryo may also
17 | have an entire copy of the extra chromosome; and
18 | WHEREAS, Full trisomy, also called primary trisomy, means
19 | that an entire extra chromosome has been copied; partial
20 | trisomy means that there is an extra copy of part of a
21 | chromosome; secondary trisomy means the extra chromosome has |
| |||||||
| |||||||
1 | quadruplicated arms; tertiary trisomy means the extra
2 | chromosome is made up of copies of arms from two other
3 | chromosomes; and | ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Trisomies can occur with any chromosome but often
5 | result in a miscarriage, rather than a live birth; and
6 | WHEREAS, Trisomy 16 is the most common trisomy in human
7 | pregnancies, occurring in more than one percent of
8 | pregnancies; and | ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Pregnancies in which some normal cells occur in
10 | addition to the trisomic cells, or mosaic trisomy 16, survive;
11 | this condition, however, usually results in a spontaneous
12 | miscarriage in the first trimester; and
13 | WHEREAS, The most common types of autosomal trisomy that
14 | survive to birth in humans are Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome),
15 | Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome), Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome),
16 | and Trisomy 8 (Warkany syndrome 2); therefore, be it
17 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
18 | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19 | we declare the month of March 2024 as Trisomy Awareness Month
20 | in the State of Illinois, and we urge all citizens of this
21 | State to become aware of the different types of trisomy; and be |
| |||||||
| |||||||
1 | it further | ||||||
2 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3 | presented to SOFT (Support Organization For Trisomy) as a
4 | symbol of our respect and esteem. |
