| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Chezzie | ||||||
| 4 | Beatrice Smith; and | ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Chezzie Smith was born to Ernest Neal Sr. and L. | ||||||
| 6 | Amanda (Brooks) Neal in Tillar, Arkansas on January 10, 1944; | ||||||
| 7 | she married Willie Williams in 1961, and they had two | ||||||
| 8 | daughters, Shirley Williams and Deborah Williams; | ||||||
| 9 | approximately 12 years later, she moved to Chicago; while | ||||||
| 10 | there, she met and married John Smith, who helped raise her | ||||||
| 11 | daughters until his passing in 1988; while on a bus trip to | ||||||
| 12 | Arkansas, she met Richard Anderson, and they remained | ||||||
| 13 | companions until her passing; and | ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, Chezzie Smith held several jobs at manufacturing | ||||||
| 15 | companies, including Zenith TV and Dynamic Products; in her | ||||||
| 16 | later years, she returned to working and was employed through | ||||||
| 17 | Easter Seals and at the Austin Senior Satellite Center for a | ||||||
| 18 | short time; and | ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, Chezzie Smith loved cooking; in between jobs, she | ||||||
| 20 | would prepare and sell lunches and dinners to neighbors and | ||||||
| 21 | local businesses in the area; she worked at several | ||||||
| 22 | restaurants, where she insisted that they incorporate soul | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | food on the menu, and she also managed her own restaurant on | ||||||
| 2 | Chicago Avenue inside of the landmark Citizens Bank Building | ||||||
| 3 | on Laramie for a few years; and | ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, Chezzie Smith was an active member of Pleasant | ||||||
| 5 | Valley, Great True Vine, and Rock Of Ages Baptist Church, | ||||||
| 6 | where she served on the Mother's Board; she always served on | ||||||
| 7 | the Cooking Committee at the churches she attended over the | ||||||
| 8 | years; and | ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, Chezzie Smith loved listening to gospel music, | ||||||
| 10 | and her favorite performers included Lee Williams, Darius | ||||||
| 11 | Price, Tasha Cobbs, and Jekalyn Carr; she also loved playing | ||||||
| 12 | cards, going to the casino, listening to old school music, and | ||||||
| 13 | dancing; and | ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, Chezzie Smith was a devoted mother and | ||||||
| 15 | grandmother who was known for being the life of the party at | ||||||
| 16 | every gathering, an empathetic caregiver, and an unyielding | ||||||
| 17 | spirit; and | ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, Chezzie Smith was preceded in death by her | ||||||
| 19 | parents; her first husband, Willie Williams; her second | ||||||
| 20 | husband, John Smith; her sister, Ruthie Lee; her brothers, | ||||||
| 21 | Ernest Neal and Huey P. Neal; and several nieces and nephews; | ||||||
| 22 | and | ||||||

| 1 | WHEREAS, Chezzie Smith is survived by her partner, Richard | ||||||
| 2 | Anderson; her daughters, Shirley Williams and Deborah (Larry) | ||||||
| 3 | Williams-Thurmond; her sister, Evelyn Jones; her | ||||||
| 4 | grandchildren, Chezina Williams, Monchez Williams, Montrail | ||||||
| 5 | Oliver, and Janeicia Williams; her great-grandchildren, | ||||||
| 6 | Zankia, Jamir, Meeghan, Aaron, Laparish, and M.J.; her special | ||||||
| 7 | cousin, Erma Given; her longtime friends, Rene, Betty, and | ||||||
| 8 | Dean; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; therefore, | ||||||
| 9 | be it | ||||||
| 10 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 11 | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 12 | we mourn the passing of Chezzie Beatrice Smith and extend our | ||||||
| 13 | sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew | ||||||
| 14 | and loved her; and be it further | ||||||
| 15 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 16 | presented to the family of Chezzie Smith as an expression of | ||||||
| 17 | our deepest sympathy. | ||||||
