HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Marian
4Lois Shields Robinson of Chicago, who passed away on May 31,
52024; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Marian Robinson was born to Rebecca Jumper and
7Purnell Shields in Chicago on July 29, 1937; she attended
8teaching college; she married Fraser Robinson III in 1960, and
9they resided on Chicago's South Side, where they raised two
10children, Craig and Michelle, the future First Lady of the
11United States; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Marian Robinson worked as a secretary before
13becoming a stay-at-home mother; she later worked as a bank
14secretary until retirement; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Marian Robinson became a resident of the White
16House during the eight-year presidency of her son-in-law,
17Barack Obama, beginning in 2009; during her tenure, she was
18affectionately known as "first grandma", took care of her
19granddaughters, and successfully avoided the limelight while
20attending various events, concerts, and state dinners; she
21also joined the first family on a number of overseas trips
22before returning to Chicago; and

1    WHEREAS, Marian Robinson especially enjoyed spending time
2with her friends and attending weekly yoga classes; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Marian Robinson was a loving mother, a supportive
4mother-in-law, and a devoted grandmother; she will be
5remembered as a grounded, witty, and tough-minded matriarch of
6her family, providing steadiness and a fresh perspective to
7those around her; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Marian Robinson was preceded in death by her
9husband; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Marian Robinson is survived by her children,
11Craig (Kelly) Robinson and Michelle (Barack) Obama, and six
12grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
14HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
15we mourn the passing of Marian Lois Shields Robinson and
16extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all
17who knew and loved her; and be it further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to the family of Marian Robinson as an expression of
20our deepest sympathy.
