2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to recognize President James Earl "Jimmy" | ||||||
4 | Carter Jr. on the occasion of his 100th birthday on October 1, | ||||||
5 | 2024, and for his unwavering commitment to peace, democracy, | ||||||
6 | and humanitarian efforts; and | ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, President Carter was born in Plains, Georgia on | ||||||
8 | October 1, 1924; and | ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, President Carter served in the Georgia State | ||||||
10 | Senate from 1963 to 1967, as the Governor of Georgia from 1970 | ||||||
11 | to 1975, and as the 39th President of the United States from | ||||||
12 | 1977 to 1981; and | ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, While in office, President Carter established the | ||||||
14 | U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of | ||||||
15 | Education, and he created a national energy policy that | ||||||
16 | included conservation, price control, and new technology; and | ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, After leaving office in 1981, President Carter | ||||||
18 | established The Carter Center to promote and expand human | ||||||
19 | rights in 1982, earning him a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002; and | ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Throughout the years, President Carter has |

1 | traveled extensively to conduct peace negotiations, monitor | ||||||
2 | elections, and further the eradication of infectious diseases; | ||||||
3 | and | ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, President Carter's dedication to public service | ||||||
5 | through The Carter Center has pushed forward significant | ||||||
6 | contributions to global health, democracy, and human rights; | ||||||
7 | and | ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, President Carter's legacy includes being a key | ||||||
9 | figure in support of the nonprofit organization Habitat for | ||||||
10 | Humanity, which has provided shelter and improved living | ||||||
11 | conditions for more than 59 million people across the globe; | ||||||
12 | and | ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, President Carter's humility and dedication to | ||||||
14 | community service serve as an inspiration to individuals and | ||||||
15 | leaders alike, encouraging acts of kindness and civic | ||||||
16 | engagement; and | ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Despite President Carter being sworn in as | ||||||
18 | president more than 40 years ago and only serving one term, he | ||||||
19 | has never stopped working to serve the people; therefore, be | ||||||
20 | it | ||||||

2 | we recognize the 100th birthday of President James Earl | ||||||
3 | "Jimmy" Carter Jr., his contributions to our nation and the | ||||||
4 | world, and the enduring impact of his life's work in promoting | ||||||
5 | peace, democracy, and humanitarianism; and be it further | ||||||
6 | RESOLVED, That we wish President Carter continued health | ||||||
7 | and happiness; and be it further | ||||||
8 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
9 | presented to President Carter as an expression of our | ||||||
10 | gratitude for his service. |
