Amends the Department of Transportation Law of the Civil Administrative Code of Illinois. Requires the Department of Transportation to develop a policy which ensures the safety of pedestrians and cyclists on roadways within the State. Establishes that improvements will be made during routine maintenance and within a distance of 1,000 feet of the maintenance work on any State road within a municipality to include high visibility signage, crosswalk improvements, curb bump outs, barrier protected bike lanes, and bus shelters.

2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,

3 | | represented in the General Assembly:

4 | | Section 5. The Department of Transportation Law of the
|
5 | | Civil Administrative Code of Illinois is amended by adding |
6 | | Section 2705-625 as follows: |

8 | | Sec. 2705-625. Safety improvements to State roads for |
9 | | pedestrians and cyclists. The Department shall develop a |
10 | | policy which ensures the safety of pedestrians and cyclists on |
11 | | roadways within this State. The policy shall provide that |
12 | | improvements will be made during routine maintenance and |
13 | | within a distance of 1,000 feet of the maintenance work to any |
14 | | State roads within a municipality to include, but not be |
15 | | limited to, high visibility signage, crosswalk improvements, |
16 | | curb bump outs, barrier protected bike lanes, and bus |
17 | | shelters.
