1 | SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The U.S. Army became the first established branch | ||||||
3 | of the United States military on June 14, 1775, and millions of | ||||||
4 | men and women have served their country since then; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, To honor and compensate veterans of the War of | ||||||
6 | 1812, the United States government provided soldiers with land | ||||||
7 | grants for the land between the Illinois and Mississippi | ||||||
8 | Rivers, which drove the initial settlement of the "Bounty | ||||||
9 | Land" of Illinois, bringing veterans to Quincy even before the | ||||||
10 | city was formally organized; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Even in its earliest days, Quincy's veterans | ||||||
12 | assisted the State in quelling the Blackhawk Indian unrest and | ||||||
13 | brought peace to the Moorman settlement in Nauvoo; and | ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Thousands of Quincyans fought in the Civil War to | ||||||
15 | preserve the Union and to end slavery, and in every military | ||||||
16 | conflict since, Quincy's sons and daughters have served their | ||||||
17 | State and nation in all branches of the military with honor and | ||||||
18 | distinction; and | ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Upon returning home from their assigned duties, | ||||||
20 | these same sons and daughters devoted themselves to building | ||||||
21 | those institutions of government, church, and school to |

1 | preserve Quincy's rich heritage; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The City of Quincy has had a profound connection | ||||||
3 | to the men and women who served this country since 1886 with | ||||||
4 | the construction of the Illinois Soldiers and Sailors Home; | ||||||
5 | the city's connection to military veterans continues to grow | ||||||
6 | through programs such as the Great River Honor Flight, Fishing | ||||||
7 | for Freedom, and the Tri-State Warrior Outreach; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Military veterans have been an important part of | ||||||
9 | Quincy from its founding to today; the tenets of freedom that | ||||||
10 | are enshrined in the U.S. Constitution remain rights held | ||||||
11 | dearly and cultivated by its residents today; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, This veteran heritage has ensured that the many | ||||||
13 | natural wonders that surround Quincy, such as the forests and | ||||||
14 | rivers, the fertile lowlands, and the bluffs, continue to | ||||||
15 | provide in abundance the outdoor experiences that originally | ||||||
16 | drew the city's forefathers to this land; therefore, be it
| ||||||
17 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
18 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF | ||||||
19 | REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that we declare the City of | ||||||
20 | Quincy as "Veterans City" for the biennium of 2023 and 2024; | ||||||
21 | and be it further |

1 | RESOLVED, That military veterans are held in the highest | ||||||
2 | regard for their service and their sacrifice in Quincy; and be | ||||||
3 | it further
| ||||||
4 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
5 | presented to the Mayor of Quincy and the residents of the | ||||||
6 | Illinois Veterans' Home at Quincy.
