| 1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to | ||||||
| 3 | recognize Loyola University Chicago, the only Jesuit Catholic | ||||||
| 4 | University in the State of Illinois; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago originally opened its | ||||||
| 6 | doors as St. Ignatius College on September 5, 1870; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago's School of Law opened | ||||||
| 8 | in 1908, admitting both women and men; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago's Stritch School of | ||||||
| 10 | Medicine was founded in 1920; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago, initially having no | ||||||
| 12 | home field for its football team, adopted the nickname | ||||||
| 13 | "Ramblers" for all of its athletic teams in 1926; and
| ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago opened Arrupe College, | ||||||
| 15 | an innovative two-year college for Chicago-area students with | ||||||
| 16 | limited financial means, in the fall of 2015; and
| ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago additionally includes | ||||||
| 18 | the Parkinson School of Health Sciences and Public Health, the | ||||||
| 19 | Niehoff School of Nursing, the Quinlan School of Business, the | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | College of Arts & Sciences, and the Schools of Education, | ||||||
| 2 | Social Work, and Communications; and
| ||||||
| 3 | WHEREAS, Today, Loyola University Chicago enrolls more | ||||||
| 4 | than 17,000 students seeking undergraduate, graduate, and | ||||||
| 5 | professional degrees, with 42% of its study body being | ||||||
| 6 | students of color and 98% of its undergraduate students | ||||||
| 7 | receiving grants and/or scholarships; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago had 2,418 students | ||||||
| 9 | receive a Monetary Assistance Program (MAP) grant in 2023, | ||||||
| 10 | more than one-half of all Illinois undergraduates attending | ||||||
| 11 | the university; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago inaugurated Mark C. | ||||||
| 13 | Reed, Ed.D., as its 25th president on November 3, 2022; and
| ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, President Dr. Reed has been a distinguished | ||||||
| 15 | leader and educator at Jesuit institutions for more than 20 | ||||||
| 16 | years, previously serving as president of St. Joseph's | ||||||
| 17 | University in Pennsylvania for seven years and holding several | ||||||
| 18 | leadership positions at Fairfield University in Connecticut | ||||||
| 19 | for 15 years; and
| ||||||
| 20 | WHEREAS, President Dr. Reed is a student-centered leader | ||||||
| 21 | committed to being an active participant in the academic, | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | spiritual, and social life of Loyola University Chicago; and
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, President Dr. Reed serves as chair of the Council | ||||||
| 3 | of Presidents for the Atlantic 10 Conference, which Loyola | ||||||
| 4 | University Chicago joined in July 2022; he also serves on the | ||||||
| 5 | boards of the American Council on Education, the Association | ||||||
| 6 | of Catholic Colleges and Universities, and the Association of | ||||||
| 7 | Jesuit Colleges and Universities; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago will celebrate its | ||||||
| 9 | 153rd anniversary in September 2023; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 10 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
| 11 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize Loyola | ||||||
| 12 | University Chicago, the only Jesuit Catholic University in the | ||||||
| 13 | State of Illinois; and be it further
| ||||||
| 14 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 15 | presented to the President of Loyola University Chicago, Mark | ||||||
| 16 | C. Reed, Ed.D., as an expression of our esteem and respect.
