| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
| 3 | | to learn of the death of Elizabeth N. "Beth" (Newell) Murphy, a |
| 4 | | beloved community leader, who passed away on April 24, 2023; |
| 5 | | and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Beth Murphy was raised in the Albany Park |
| 7 | | neighborhood of Chicago; she married James "Jim" Murphy, and |
| 8 | | he preceded her in death in 2003; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Beth and Jim Murphy purchased Ray's Bleachers, |
| 10 | | located across the street from Wrigley Field, in 1980 and |
| 11 | | renamed it Murphy's Bleachers; they added a rooftop to the |
| 12 | | establishment in 1984; and
|
| 13 | | WHEREAS, After Jim's passing, Beth Murphy assumed control |
| 14 | | of the business operations; under her ownership, Murphy's |
| 15 | | Bleachers grew into one of America's most iconic sports bars, |
| 16 | | becoming a sanctuary for the neighborhood and Chicago Cubs |
| 17 | | players and a destination for all baseball fans; and
|
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Beth Murphy served as the spokesperson for the |
| 19 | | Wrigley rooftop owners, representing the rights of local |
| 20 | | businesses and residents in numerous battles with the Chicago |
| 21 | | Cubs organization; and
