SENATE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to 
3congratulate Whitey's Ice Cream on the occasion of the 90th 
4anniversary of its founding; and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, Whitey's Ice Cream was established in 1933 in 
6Moline by Chester "Whitey" Lindgren, who received his nickname 
7due to his white-blonde hair; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Chester Lindgren hired Bob Tunberg at the age of 
915, and over the years, they became close friends, eventually 
10leading Bob and his wife, Norma, to purchase the store in 1953; 
11and
  
  
12    WHEREAS, Bob Tunberg and Norma's sons, Jeff and Jon, 
13joined the business when they were old enough and started 
14picking up trash in the parking lot before they went to school 
15each morning; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Today, Jeff and Jon serve as co-owners with the 
17title of president remaining vacant to honor their father who 
18passed away in 1991; and
  
 
19    WHEREAS, Whitey's Ice Cream currently has eight store 
20locations in Illinois and Iowa; and

1    WHEREAS, A number of innovations to the industry were born 
2at Whitey's Ice Cream, including high powered malt machines, 
3candy bar shakes, no sugar added ice cream, and chocolate chip 
4cookie dough ice cream; and
 
5    WHEREAS, In 1988, Whitey's Ice Cream expanded into the 
6wholesale market and entered into the world of grocery stores; 
7and
 
8    WHEREAS, Whitey's Ice Cream has received a number of 
9accolades, including being named Best in the Midwest according 
10to the readers of Midwest Living Magazine, being voted one of 
11the Best Ice Cream Shops in the World by Conde Nast Traveler 
12readers, and being selected as the Best Ice Cream in the Quad 
13City Times Reader's Choice Awards time and time again; and
  
 
  
14    WHEREAS, The Tunbergs credit the success of Whitey's Ice 
15Cream to a quality product, clean environment, fair prices, 
16and a knowledgeable, friendly staff; therefore, be it
  
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL 
18ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate 
19Whitey's Ice Cream on its 90th anniversary, and we wish it many 
20more wonderful years; and be it further
