SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Gary Lynn Icenogle of Carthage, who passed away on June 1, 2023; and

WHEREAS, Gary Icenogle was born to William E. Icenogle and Wilma Jean (Bauser) Curtis in Spring Valley on August 1, 1946; he graduated from Rushville High School in 1965; he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he was a heavy machinery operator and ordinance specialist while stationed at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam during the Vietnam War; he completed his service at March Air Force Base and was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant on January 18, 1972; he was baptized and confirmed in his faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Carthage on October 21, 1972; he married Carolyn Kay Huls on May 12, 1973; and

WHEREAS, Gary Icenogle was employed by the Western Illinois Electric Co-op (WIEC); he furthered his education by earning a degree in heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration from Southeastern Community College in August 1990; he was also employed in maintenance at the Bentley Lumber Company, Robert Morris College, Southeastern Community College, and Memorial Hospital, from which he retired in 2008; and

WHEREAS, Gary Icenogle devoted himself as a Boy Scout leader for many years, volunteering as scoutmaster for Troop 72 of Carthage from 1986 to 1991; under his leadership, approximately 14 young men earned the rank of Eagle Scout; as a result of his efforts, he was awarded Volunteer of the Year by Cub Scout Pack 39 in 1986, the National Scoutmaster Award of Merit in 1990, the Algonquin District Award of Merit in 1991, and the Eagle Ridge District Award of Merit for the Saukee Area Council in 1993; and

WHEREAS, Gary Icenogle had a passion for fishing and loved the outdoors; he instilled a love for camping, hunting, and especially fishing in his children and grandchildren; he enjoyed woodworking, leaving behind many keepsakes; he was very artistic and occasionally painted woodland scenes and refurbished vintage steel toy trucks; in his later years, he also assembled model airplanes; he enjoyed reading, particularly Civil War era history; he was fond of raising cattle and tinkering with tractors; he had an undying love for his family that will be felt for many generations to come; and

WHEREAS, Gary Icenogle was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn; his parents; and his stepfather, Clyde Curtis; and

WHEREAS, Gary Icenogle is survived by his son, Steven James (Megan) Icenogle; his daughter, Jennifer Lynn (Christopher) Meeks; his grandchildren, Jessie, Dalton, and Zachary Icenogle and Samuel and Benjamin Meeks; his brothers, Eldon "Butch" Icenogle and Dennis (Kate) Icenogle; his sisters, Debra Bordenkircher, Barbara (Roger) Bailey, and Shelly (Hank) Petrey; his in-laws, Carla (Kenneth) Crossland, Nancy Huls, and Lester (Yvonne) Huls; and numerous nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Gary Lynn Icenogle and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Gary Icenogle as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
