| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
| 3 | | to learn of the death of Gibson the service dog, who passed |
| 4 | | away on July 17, 2023; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Gibson, an eight-year-old Black Lab, was a |
| 6 | | certified service dog, serving as part of the Facility Dog |
| 7 | | Program and the Victim-Witness Program; he was the first |
| 8 | | service dog for Sangamon County, and his three handlers worked |
| 9 | | with the Courthouse Dogs Foundation out of Bellevue, |
| 10 | | Washington and trained with Duo Dogs, Inc. in St. Louis; he was |
| 11 | | one of 302 dogs working in courthouses in 41 states, which |
| 12 | | includes 11 sites in Illinois; and
|
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Gibson was a fixture at the Sangamon County |
| 14 | | Courthouse, where he comforted adults, children, veterans, and |
| 15 | | anyone experiencing trauma, pain, or anxiety while in court; |
| 16 | | he served the citizens of Sangamon County for six years and had |
| 17 | | been a familiar presence around the courthouse since 2017; he |
| 18 | | accompanied people into the courtroom and was used at the |
| 19 | | Sangamon County Child Advocacy Center when police and |
| 20 | | prosecutors were conducting forensic interviews with children; |
| 21 | | he served victims in federal court and provided outreach and |
| 22 | | education to school children, healthcare facilities, and |
| 23 | | community organizations; and
