| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
| 3 | | to learn of the death of Judge Matthew Maurer of Springfield, |
| 4 | | who passed away on July 23, 2023; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Judge Maurer was born in Springfield to Dr. |
| 6 | | Joseph Jude and Rosetta M. Tega
Maurer on May 21, 1961; he |
| 7 | | graduated from Griffin High School in 1980 and the University |
| 8 | | of
Illinois College of Law
in 1987; he married Kristina "Kris" |
| 9 | | McCarthy on January 13, 1995; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Judge Maurer began his career as a prosecutor in |
| 11 | | the states attorney's office; he later served in
private |
| 12 | | practice, as a felony public defender, and as first assistant |
| 13 | | states attorney; he was appointed judge of the 7th Judicial |
| 14 | | Circuit in 2013; and
|
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Judge Maurer was charitable towards many area |
| 16 | | organizations,
including the St. John's College of Nursing |
| 17 | | Scholarship Fund, W.I.L.D. Canine Rescue, Helping Hands,
and |
| 18 | | many others; he was a member of Koke Mill Christian Church; and
|
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Judge Maurer was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, |
| 20 | | Chicago Bears, Illini basketball and football, NASCAR, and |
| 21 | | Formula One
racing; he enjoyed watching Gunsmoke and Wagon |
|

| 1 | | Train; one of his favorite childhood
memories was riding in |
| 2 | | pony shows in Valley View; he was also known to be an |
| 3 | | accomplished
baseball and basketball player; and

| 4 | | WHEREAS, Judge Maurer was preceded in death by his |
| 5 | | parents; his siblings, Dr. JoAnne M. Maurer, John A. Maurer, |
| 6 | | and Dr.
Chris L. Maurer; his father-in-law, Kevin L. McCarthy; |
| 7 | | and his labs, Teddy and Molly; and
|
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Judge Maurer is survived by his wife, Kris; his |
| 9 | | son, Shad Surgis; his daughter, Jenna Maurer;
his siblings, |
| 10 | | Mary Rose (Tom) Hoffman, Joseph J. (Lisa) Maurer Jr., Linda
|
| 11 | | Shoemaker, Diane Howard (Rex Bruss), Dr. Susan Maurer (Denise |
| 12 | | Wend), and Daniel (Rachael) Maurer; his mother-in-law, |
| 13 | | Patricia McCarthy (Dennis Poss); his brothers-in-law, Dr. Mark |
| 14 | | Gekas, Kevin (Rhonda)
McCarthy, and Kyle McCarthy; his |
| 15 | | sister-in-law, Kim McCarthy; several aunts, uncles, nieces, |
| 16 | | nephews, and cousins; and his golden doodle puppy,

| 19 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
| 20 | | Judge Matthew Maurer and extend our sincere condolences to his |
| 21 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
