SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, On December 29, 1970, President Richard Nixon 
3signed into law the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), 
4which went into effect on April 28, 1971; and
 
5    WHEREAS, OSHA was created with the intent to provide 
6American workers the right to a safe workplace through 
7requiring employers to provide safe working conditions; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Despite the existence of OSHA, tens of thousands 
9of American workers are killed by workplace injuries and 
10occupational disease every year, while tens of thousands more 
11are permanently disabled, injured, or made ill; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Each April, Workers' Memorial Day has been 
13observed as a day to remember those who have suffered and died 
14on the job; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Since 1989, workers, employers, and government 
16leaders have typically gathered on or near April 28th to 
17commemorate those who have lost their lives while working to 
18provide a good standard of living for their families and 
19communities; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL

1ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare April 26, 
22024 as Workers' Memorial Day in the State of Illinois; and be 
3it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That we encourage all employers to reaffirm 
5their efforts towards improving workplace safety, seeking 
6stronger health standard enforcement, and treating workers 
7with dignity as constant improvements in worker safety are 
8pursued; and be it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That we encourage fellow Illinoisans to honor 
10our workers by observing Workers' Memorial Day, remembering 
11the victims of workplace injuries and disease, and 
12recommitting to supporting safety and health improvements in 
13every American workplace.
