2 | WHEREAS, The rebozo, a traditional Mexican garment that is | ||||||
3 | a hybrid of a scarf and a shawl, is a respected sight within | ||||||
4 | the Latino community, serving as an icon of the indigenous | ||||||
5 | culture in Mexico while representing the strength, resilience, | ||||||
6 | and loving nature of Mexican women; and | ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, The rebozo is not only a symbol of national | ||||||
8 | identity and religiosity, representing Mexico on an | ||||||
9 | international level, but is also a symbol of love transmitted | ||||||
10 | from a grandmother or a mother to a daughter as a physical | ||||||
11 | embodiment of safety, courage, and love for the family and the | ||||||
12 | country; and | ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Rebozos are traditionally worn by women in the | ||||||
14 | Latin American community; its origins come from the | ||||||
15 | colonization of Mexico, being predominantly worn by the lower, | ||||||
16 | mestizo classes in contrast to the Spanish mantilla being worn | ||||||
17 | by upper class Spaniards during the colonial era; the | ||||||
18 | garment's evolution eventually led to it being worn by the | ||||||
19 | upper class during special events; and | ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, The rebozo came to further express the different | ||||||
21 | indigenous lifestyles of Mexico, as its fabric was dependent | ||||||
22 | on the region of Mexico in which it was made; for example, it |

1 | was traditionally made out of warm sheep wool in Oaxaca's | ||||||
2 | chilly mountains, of cotton in the valley, and of beautiful | ||||||
3 | silk combinations in towns that relied on the use of silk worms | ||||||
4 | to produce such fibers; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, During the 20th century in Mexico, the rebozo | ||||||
6 | came to be seen as a sign of modesty, tradition, and fashion, | ||||||
7 | which represents the growth of women in society and gives them | ||||||
8 | a unifying element to express their national identity | ||||||
9 | throughout the world; and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, The rebozo has been prominently worn by such | ||||||
11 | notable women as Frida Kahlo, actress María Félix, and former | ||||||
12 | First Lady of Mexico Margarita Zavala, and the item remains | ||||||
13 | popular in all areas of Mexico and the United States and | ||||||
14 | throughout the world; and | ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Rebozos are mainly produced in and exported by | ||||||
16 | Mexico, although some are produced in Spain and Portugal; and | ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, On average, a traditionally woven rebozo takes 30 | ||||||
18 | to 60 days to produce and involves anywhere from 15 to 200 | ||||||
19 | different steps, depending on how complicated the design is | ||||||
20 | and the type of fiber being used; therefore, be it | ||||||
21 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL |
