SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Patrick Damien "Pat" McAnany, who passed away on February 7, 2024 at the age of 93; and

WHEREAS, Pat McAnany, the son of Patrick Damien McAnany and Julia Rose (Guignon) McAnany, was born on February 28, 1930 in Kansas City, Kansas, along with his identical twin, Emile, and lived his childhood alongside his siblings, Richard, John, and Julie; and

WHEREAS, Pat McAnany entered the Jesuits in 1952 and was ordained a priest in 1963 with Emile; in 1970, he left the Society of Jesus to marry the love of his life, Charlain Agnes Rigamonti, who had been a nun in the Sisters of Saint Mary; and

WHEREAS, Pat McAnany and Charlain had two children together, Clare Marie and Damien; and

WHEREAS, Pat McAnany had a lifelong love of law, graduating from Harvard Law School in 1960; he taught in the law school at St. Louis University from 1966 to 1969 and helped rewrite the Illinois penal code from 1969 to 1971; and

WHEREAS, Pat McAnany continued his teaching career, serving as a professor of criminal justice at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 1971 to 1999; he became the head of the department from 1991 to 1996, adding a Ph.D. program at the end of his tenure; and

WHEREAS, Pat McAnany was an active member of Ascension Parish in Oak Park since 1971; he was a founding member of the Peace and Justice Committee, which he served for 40 years; and

WHEREAS, Pat McAnany also served as chairman of the board of the Illinois Coalition to End the Death Penalty, lobbying successfully for its abolition; he also organized to help formerly incarcerated heroin addicts and domestic violence survivors, among countless other causes; and

WHEREAS, Pat McAnany had a passion for history, family history in particular; he researched his lineage extensively and wrote essays about his ancestry, which can still be found on McAnanyfamily.net; and

WHEREAS, Pat McAnany is survived by his loving wife, his two children, Clare Marie Kalemba and Damien McAnany Luce (Maggie Flemming Luce), and his grandchildren, Sebastian, Rose, and Xavier Kalemba and Vida and Silas Luce; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Patrick Damien "Pat" McAnany and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Pat McAnany as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
