2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Patrick Damien "Pat" McAnany, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on February 7, 2024 at the age of 93; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Pat McAnany, the son of Patrick Damien McAnany | ||||||
6 | and Julia Rose (Guignon) McAnany, was born on February 28, | ||||||
7 | 1930 in Kansas City, Kansas, along with his identical twin, | ||||||
8 | Emile, and lived his childhood alongside his siblings, | ||||||
9 | Richard, John, and Julie; and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Pat McAnany entered the Jesuits in 1952 and was | ||||||
11 | ordained a priest in 1963 with Emile; in 1970, he left the | ||||||
12 | Society of Jesus to marry the love of his life, Charlain Agnes | ||||||
13 | Rigamonti, who had been a nun in the Sisters of Saint Mary; and | ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Pat McAnany and Charlain had two children | ||||||
15 | together, Clare Marie and Damien; and | ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Pat McAnany had a lifelong love of law, | ||||||
17 | graduating from Harvard Law School in 1960; he taught in the | ||||||
18 | law school at St. Louis University from 1966 to 1969 and helped | ||||||
19 | rewrite the Illinois penal code from 1969 to 1971; and | ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Pat McAnany continued his teaching career, |

1 | serving as a professor of criminal justice at the University | ||||||
2 | of Illinois at Chicago from 1971 to 1999; he became the head of | ||||||
3 | the department from 1991 to 1996, adding a Ph.D. program at the | ||||||
4 | end of his tenure; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Pat McAnany was an active member of Ascension | ||||||
6 | Parish in Oak Park since 1971; he was a founding member of the | ||||||
7 | Peace and Justice Committee, which he served for 40 years; and | ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Pat McAnany also served as chairman of the board | ||||||
9 | of the Illinois Coalition to End the Death Penalty, lobbying | ||||||
10 | successfully for its abolition; he also organized to help | ||||||
11 | formerly incarcerated heroin addicts and domestic violence | ||||||
12 | survivors, among countless other causes; and | ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Pat McAnany had a passion for history, family | ||||||
14 | history in particular; he researched his lineage extensively | ||||||
15 | and wrote essays about his ancestry, which can still be found | ||||||
16 | on McAnanyfamily.net; and | ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Pat McAnany is survived by his loving wife, his | ||||||
18 | two children, Clare Marie Kalemba and Damien McAnany Luce | ||||||
19 | (Maggie Flemming Luce), and his grandchildren, Sebastian, | ||||||
20 | Rose, and Xavier Kalemba and Vida and Silas Luce; therefore, | ||||||

1 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
2 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
3 | Patrick Damien "Pat" McAnany and extend our sincere | ||||||
4 | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
5 | him; and be it further | ||||||
6 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
7 | presented to the family of Pat McAnany as an expression of our | ||||||
8 | deepest sympathy. |
