SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Joseph S. "Joe" Schaler of Lincoln,
4who passed away on May 29, 2024; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Joe Schaler was born to Walt Schaler Sr. and
6Catherine (Murt) Schaler in Indianapolis, Indiana on December
724, 1949; he served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam
8War from 1967 to 1969, receiving a Purple Heart for his
9service; he married Melanie Boyer on December 31, 2005; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Joe Schaler worked as a salesman at the Bankers
11Life and Casualty Company for many years before retirement;
12and
 
13    WHEREAS, Joe Schaler was the founder and chairman of the
14Central Illinois Veterans Commission, an organization
15assisting veterans experiencing homelessness in the area; he
16was also active in the creation of Hope on 5th, a nonprofit
17organization providing counseling, emergency housing, and
18other services to the community; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Joe Schaler was a member and prior commander of
20the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 159, assisting
21in the accreditation of Illinois as a Purple Heart State; he

1was also involved with the American Legion, the VFW, the
2Patriot Guard, and Lincoln Christian Church, among others; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Joe Schaler was named Citizen of the Year by the
4Lincoln Courier in 2016; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Joe Schaler wholeheartedly dedicated himself to
6those around him, leaving every community and person he met
7better off; his legacy will continue on through the lives of
8all those he positively impacted; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Joe Schaler was preceded in death by his parents;
10his wife; his son, Aaron Schaler; his brothers, Walt Schaler
11Jr. and Bob Schaler; and his sister, Margaret Schaler; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Joe Schaler is survived by his daughters, Sara
13(Sam), Emily (Aaron), Katie Schaler, and Clair Schaler; his
14grandchildren, Fletcher, Leona, and Wyatt; and several nieces,
15nephews, and cousins; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
17ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
18Joseph S. "Joe" Schaler and extend our sincere condolences to
19his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
