SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Evangelist Sammie M. Turner; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Evangelist Turner was born in Shaw, Mississippi
5to Queen Victoria Sellas and Willie Apperton on September 4,
61936; she was baptized at Parker Chapel A.M.E. Church; she
7received her education at McEvans Elementary School and
8attended high school in Shaw, Mississippi, where she played on
9the basketball team; she married Walter C. Turner Jr.; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Evangelist Turner moved to Chicago in 1958; she
11continued her education at Loop Junior College and then
12enrolled at the Moody Bible Institute; she received her
13bachelor's degree in religious education from the GMOR
14Theological Institute of America in August 2003; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Evangelist Turner retired from the City of
16Chicago Park District, where she served as supervisor and
17director of senior citizens at Seward Park; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Evangelist Turner joined Stranger Home M.B.
19Church when she moved to Chicago and later moved her
20membership to Union M.B. Church in 1959; she served with the
21missions visiting nursing homes, prisons, and those in need;

1she served with the beautifying committee and wherever she was
2needed until her husband became pastor at Greater Faith M.B.
3Church in 1984; she continued to help wherever she could as
4first lady of Greater Faith M.B. Church; after the retirement
5of her husband as a pastor, they joined New Spiritual Light
6M.B. Church, under the leadership of her son, Rev. Dr. Walter
7P. Turner III; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Evangelist Turner was active with the national,
9district, and state conventions; she served as field mission
10worker, a Bible teacher for the state and district, and as
11president, secretary, and treasurer of the Baptist Wives of
12Chicago Vicinity; she was a Bible teacher at the Renaissance
13Nursing Home for over five years and ministered in the
14Bahamas; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Evangelist Turner enjoyed following sports,
16especially tennis and the Chicago Bulls; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Evangelist Turner was preceded in death by her
18husband, Walter; her son, Clinton; her grandson, Kenneth Jr.;
19her parents; her brother, Willie Jr.; and her sister,
20Josephine; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Evangelist Turner is survived by her children,
22Mamie (Raybon), Pastor Walter (Lynne), Charnell, Arnetta

1(Terry), and Kenneth; her cousin/son, Jerome (Samella); 17
2great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; her
3nieces, Vickie and Linda; her nephews, Wayne, Michael, Paul,
4Daryl, and Steven; her special cousins, Jazie Bell (Willie)
5and Anna Belle Williams; her God-daughters, Pamela Crawford,
6Ebony Woodard, and April Woodard; her special God-daughter,
7Shannon Smith; her chosen daughter, Cynthia Taylor; her
8spiritual daughter, Wylinda Williams; her special cousins,
9Samella Hargro, Dr. Yvonne Gillie-Wallace, and Barbara and
10Barry Thomas; her guardian angels, Tamika Williams and Sylvia
11Witt; her One Hundred and Eighth Place Crew, Diane, Steve,
12Jenny, Bonita, and Jerry; and numerous other nieces, nephews,
13cousins, relatives, friends, and more; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
15ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
16Evangelist Sammie M. Turner and extend our sincere condolences
17to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be
18it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the family of Evangelist Sammie M. Turner as an
21expression of our deepest sympathy.
