SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Captain Kevin M. Hargis of the Joliet
4Fire Department, who passed away on June 29, 2024; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Capt. Hargis, the son of Larry and Charlotte
6Hargis, was born on August 28, 1972; he was dedicated to
7achieving professional excellence through education, earning
8nearly every certification for firefighters in the State of
9Illinois, completing many at advanced levels; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Capt. Hargis was a 22-year veteran of the Joliet
11Fire Department, serving as captain of Fire Station No. 7 at
12the time of his passing; he began his firefighting career with
13the Roberts Park Fire Protection District in Justice in 1992;
14he proceeded to serve with the Pleasantview Fire Protection
15District for a few years before joining the Joliet Fire
16Department in 2002, where he also served as a member and
17coordinator of the Hazardous Materials Team, a member of the
18Safety Committee, a CPR instructor, a coordinator, and a
19trainer; and
 
20    WHEREAS, In addition to his roles within the fire service,
21Capt. Hargis was a board-certified emergency nurse and a
22paramedic instructor, and he was a former faculty member of

1Joliet Junior College; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Capt. Hargis was a member of Alpha Delta Nu
3National Honor Society under the Organization for Associate
4Degree Nursing, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the National
5Association of EMS Educators, the National Association of
6EMTs, the International Association of Firefighters, the
7Illinois Society of Fire Service Instructors, and Joliet
8Firefighters Local 44; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Capt. Hargis was a devoted husband who loved
10spending time outdoors and traveling with his wife, Amy, and
11their dogs; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Capt. Hargis was known for his lighthearted
13personality, his passion for helping others, and his nickname,
14"Big Buddy"; he will be remembered for his service to and his
15impact on his community; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Capt. Hargis was preceded in death by his
17in-laws, Ronald and Catherine Szarzynski; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Capt. Hargis is survived by his wife of 19 years,
19Amy Theresia (Billapando) Hargis; his parents; his brothers,
20Lawrence Hargis and Michael Hargis; his sister, Judy (Kurt)
21Sedlacek; and numerous nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
3Captain Kevin M. Hargis of the Joliet Fire Department and
4extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all
5who knew and loved him; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Capt. Hargis as an expression of our
8deepest sympathy.
