SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of John M. Burke of Des Plaines, who passed away on July 9, 2024; and

WHEREAS, John Burke was born to Ignatius and Elizabeth Burke in New York City, New York on March 27, 1940; he was raised in Rye, New York, attending Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains and Iona College in New Rochelle, both in New York; he was a longtime resident of Des Plaines; and

WHEREAS, John Burke served as a special agent with Army Intelligence, U.S. Army, and he then pursued a career in the security and investigations industry; he served as chairman of the Chicago Chapter of the American Society for Industrial Security and was a member of the Special Agents Association; and

WHEREAS, John Burke lived a life of service to his church and community; he attended St. Stephen Protomartyr Church, where he served as a member of the parish council, as chairman of the lectors, and as a representative to the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council; he served as president of the Des Plaines History Center, the Kiwanis Club of Des Plaines, and the Des Plaines Library Board; he was active with Crime Stoppers, PADS, and Meals on Wheels; he also served as a reading tutor and mentor at Forest Elementary School for six years; and

WHEREAS, John Burke deeply loved his family, and he actively supported his daughters, took every opportunity to be involved in his granddaughter's life, and enjoyed attending family reunions in the Catskills; he also loved studying geography, history, and archaeology, and he was skilled at playing Trivial Pursuit; and

WHEREAS, John Burke was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Joan (John) Turner; and his niece, Shannon Turner; and

WHEREAS, John Burke is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marie; his daughters, Katherine and Michelle; his granddaughter, Vivian; his siblings, Regina (John) Vassak and Kevin (Elise) Burke; his cousin, Vivian "Pat" Burke; five nephews; and dozens of cousins; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of John M. Burke and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of John Burke as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
