| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
| 3 | | to learn of the death of former Illinois Auditor General |
| 4 | | William G. "Bill" Holland of Seattle, Washington, who passed |
| 5 | | away on August 10, 2024; and |
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Bill Holland was born to Edward James Holland and |
| 7 | | Jane Murdock Holland in Joliet on November 22, 1951; he was |
| 8 | | raised in Prairie Village, Kansas; he moved to Seattle, |
| 9 | | Washington to attend Seattle University in 1970, earning a |
| 10 | | degree in public affairs in 1974; he married Liz Meagher, |
| 11 | | currently Liz Bernahl, soon after; although they later |
| 12 | | divorced, they raised three children and remained friends |
| 13 | | until his passing; later in life, he returned to Seattle to |
| 14 | | live near his children and grandchildren; and |
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Bill Holland proudly worked as a public servant |
| 16 | | to the State of Illinois for 41 years; early in his career, he |
| 17 | | served as director of the Illinois House Majority |
| 18 | | Appropriations Committee Staff and as the first director of |
| 19 | | the Illinois General Assembly's Washington, D.C. office; he |
| 20 | | was appointed chief of staff to then-Illinois Senate President |
| 21 | | Phillip J. Rock in 1983, and he held that position for nearly |
| 22 | | 10 years; and |

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Bill Holland was appointed Illinois Auditor |
| 2 | | General by the 87th Illinois General Assembly in 1992; as the |
| 3 | | State's longest-serving auditor general, his career spanned |
| 4 | | the administrations of five governors, five state treasurers, |
| 5 | | and six state comptrollers, earning him a reputation for |
| 6 | | fairness, objectivity, and high ethical standards; during his |
| 7 | | tenure, he was a member of the National Association of State |
| 8 | | Auditors, Comptrollers and Treasurers (NASACT), serving as its |
| 9 | | president and ultimately being inducted into the NASACT Hall |
| 10 | | of Fame in 2022; he retired from public service in 2015; and |
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Bill Holland was a skillful handyman, a |
| 12 | | principled gin player, an above-average golfer, a fervent |
| 13 | | Fighting Illini basketball fan, a dedicated saloon enthusiast, |
| 14 | | and a consummate good neighbor; while residing in Seattle, he |
| 15 | | enjoyed working on house projects, attending sporting events |
| 16 | | of and playing cards with his grandchildren, riding an |
| 17 | | electric bike through Seattle, and watching ships come into |
| 18 | | port from his living room window that overlooked the Puget |
| 19 | | Sound; and |
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Bill Holland was a distinguished public servant, |
| 21 | | a loving father, and an adoring grandfather; he will be |
| 22 | | remembered as a public leader of high integrity, a dear friend |
| 23 | | to many, and a father and grandfather full of good humor and |
| 24 | | wisdom; and |

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Bill Holland was preceded in death by his |
| 2 | | parents; and |
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Bill Holland is survived by his siblings, Edward |
| 4 | | James (Bridget) Holland Jr., James (Julie) Holland, Mary |
| 5 | | (Chuck) Schmidt, Jack (Karen) Holland, and Jan (Jim) Stacy; |
| 6 | | his children, Meghan (Greg) Squires, Tom (Catherine) Holland, |
| 7 | | and Jack Holland; and seven grandchildren; therefore, be it |
| 8 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL |
| 9 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
| 10 | | former Illinois Auditor General William G. "Bill" Holland and |
| 11 | | extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all |
| 12 | | who knew and loved him; and be it further |
| 13 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 14 | | presented to the family of Bill Holland as an expression of our |
| 15 | | deepest sympathy. |
