SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of former Illinois Auditor General
4William G. "Bill" Holland of Seattle, Washington, who passed
5away on August 10, 2024; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Bill Holland was born to Edward James Holland and
7Jane Murdock Holland in Joliet on November 22, 1951; he was
8raised in Prairie Village, Kansas; he moved to Seattle,
9Washington to attend Seattle University in 1970, earning a
10degree in public affairs in 1974; he married Liz Meagher,
11currently Liz Bernahl, soon after; although they later
12divorced, they raised three children and remained friends
13until his passing; later in life, he returned to Seattle to
14live near his children and grandchildren; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Bill Holland proudly worked as a public servant
16to the State of Illinois for 41 years; early in his career, he
17served as director of the Illinois House Majority
18Appropriations Committee Staff and as the first director of
19the Illinois General Assembly's Washington, D.C. office; he
20was appointed chief of staff to then-Illinois Senate President
21Phillip J. Rock in 1983, and he held that position for nearly
2210 years; and

1    WHEREAS, Bill Holland was appointed Illinois Auditor
2General by the 87th Illinois General Assembly in 1992; as the
3State's longest-serving auditor general, his career spanned
4the administrations of five governors, five state treasurers,
5and six state comptrollers, earning him a reputation for
6fairness, objectivity, and high ethical standards; during his
7tenure, he was a member of the National Association of State
8Auditors, Comptrollers and Treasurers (NASACT), serving as its
9president and ultimately being inducted into the NASACT Hall
10of Fame in 2022; he retired from public service in 2015; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Bill Holland was a skillful handyman, a
12principled gin player, an above-average golfer, a fervent
13Fighting Illini basketball fan, a dedicated saloon enthusiast,
14and a consummate good neighbor; while residing in Seattle, he
15enjoyed working on house projects, attending sporting events
16of and playing cards with his grandchildren, riding an
17electric bike through Seattle, and watching ships come into
18port from his living room window that overlooked the Puget
19Sound; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Bill Holland was a distinguished public servant,
21a loving father, and an adoring grandfather; he will be
22remembered as a public leader of high integrity, a dear friend
23to many, and a father and grandfather full of good humor and
24wisdom; and

1    WHEREAS, Bill Holland was preceded in death by his
2parents; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Bill Holland is survived by his siblings, Edward
4James (Bridget) Holland Jr., James (Julie) Holland, Mary
5(Chuck) Schmidt, Jack (Karen) Holland, and Jan (Jim) Stacy;
6his children, Meghan (Greg) Squires, Tom (Catherine) Holland,
7and Jack Holland; and seven grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
9ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
10former Illinois Auditor General William G. "Bill" Holland and
11extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all
12who knew and loved him; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to the family of Bill Holland as an expression of our
15deepest sympathy.
