SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, October is nationally recognized as Breast Cancer
3Awareness Month; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer
5among women globally and the second leading cause of cancer
6death among women in the United States; and
 
7    WHEREAS, More than one in eight women and one in 833 men in
8the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in
9their lifetimes; and
 
10    WHEREAS, An estimated 313,510 Americans will be diagnosed
11with invasive breast cancer in 2024; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Metastatic breast cancer (MBC) occurs when breast
13cancer spreads to other parts of the body, including the
14bones, lungs, liver, and brain, and individuals with MBC have
15an average life expectancy of 24 to 36 months after diagnosis;
16and
 
17    WHEREAS, Regardless of early detection, approximately 30%
18of stage 0 to stage III breast cancers will return as stage IV;
19and

1    WHEREAS, An estimated 42,780 Americans will die from
2breast cancer in 2024, equal to 117 women and men per day, with
398% of deaths being caused by MBC; and
 
4    WHEREAS, MBC affects all races and socioeconomic classes;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, While white women see slightly higher incidence
7rates of breast cancer, the mortality rate for Black women
8with breast cancer is 41% higher than that of white women, and
9breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death for
10Hispanic women; and
 
11    WHEREAS, METAvivor Research and Support, a national
12organization, funds critical stage IV metastatic breast cancer
13research and educates the public about metastatic breast
14cancer and the lack of funding for stage IV treatment; and
 
15    WHEREAS, METAvivor aims to dramatically increase the
16current percentage of breast cancer research dollars for
17already metastasized patients from under 5% to 30%; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The national hashtags for this initiative on
19social media fall under #METAvivor and #LightUpMBC, with the
20latter representing a global campaign designed to educate,
21raise funds, and shine a light on the critical need for stage

1IV metastatic breast cancer research; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The #LightUpMBC campaign, held annually on
3October 13, illuminates 117 landmarks around the world in the
4metastatic breast cancer colors of teal, pink, and green to
5bring awareness to the disease and to honor the daily number of
6117 lives lost to MBC; and
 
7    WHEREAS, While the pink ribbon is well-known for
8representing the fight against early stage breast cancer, it
9is not inclusive of stage IV; therefore, the metastatic breast
10cancer awareness tricolor ribbon includes teal to portray
11healing and spirituality, green for the triumph of spring over
12winter, life over death, renewal, hope, and immortality, and a
13thin pink overlay to signify that the cancer originated in the
14breast; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The #LightUpMBC campaign will culminate in a
16virtual broadcast, #LightUpMBC Live, to commemorate landmarks
17lighting up around the world, to share inspiring stories by
18the metastatic breast cancer community, and to raise research
19funds; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
21ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare October 13,
222024 as Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day in the State of

1Illinois; and be it further
 
2    RESOLVED, That we recognize the METAvivor #LightUpMBC
3national campaign; and be it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That we encourage citizens to join the national
5effort towards awareness of metastatic breast cancer during
6October through METAvivor; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8presented to METAvivor with our sincere appreciation for their
9efforts to address breast cancer.
