SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Vivian "Viv" (Brimmer) Brown, who
4passed away on September 11, 2024; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Vivian Brown was born to Carroll Nathan and
6Lillian Shelton Brimmer in Chicago on July 14, 1922; she was
7raised in West Woodlawn; she attended McCosh Elementary School
8and graduated from Englewood High School in June 1940; she
9later received an associate's degree from Wilson Junior
10College; she married William Robert Brown on August 31, 1947,
11and they had three children and raised their family in
12Woodlawn, Englewood, Bronzeville, and Chatham before
13purchasing a home in West Chesterfield, and he preceded her in
14death in 2003; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Vivian Brown began her career as a librarian at
16the central branch of the Chicago Public Library; she later
17transferred to the Oakwood branch in Lincoln Center; after an
18interim with the Chicago Commission for Handicapped Children,
19she took a position as a catalogue librarian at Chicago State
20University (CSU), where she worked until retiring in 2005
21after 38 years of service; while employed at CSU, she
22completed her baccalaureate degree in Black Studies; and

1    WHEREAS, Vivian Brown was a lifetime member of Sigma Gamma
2Rho Sorority, Inc. and sang regularly in the choir at Lincoln
3Memorial Church, where she had been baptized and married; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Vivian Brown enjoyed reading, working crossword
5puzzles, and traveling extensively, including a 1988 trip to
6Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore; she also enjoyed watching NBA
7basketball, especially the Golden State Warriors; on her 100th
8birthday, she was honored with a call from Scottie Pippen and a
9musical tribute from the Grammy winning group Take Six; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Vivian Brown is survived by her children, Lydia
11Louise (Magras Muhammad), Charlotte Marie, and William
12(Barbara) Brown Jr.; two grandchildren; two great-nephews; one
13great-granddaughter; one great-grandson; six
14great-grandnieces; her great-grandnephews; and a host of
15friends and great-great- grandnieces and
16great-great-grandnephews; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
18ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
19Vivian "Viv" (Brimmer) Brown and extend our sincere
20condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved
21her; and be it further
 
22    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
