SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3congratulate Morton College on the occasion of the 100th
4anniversary of its founding; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Morton College first opened its doors on
6September 15, 1924 with 11 teachers and 76 students under the
7direction of its first president, Harry Victor Church, who
8made Morton a peoples' college with terminal courses for
9better citizenship as well as preparation for university; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Morton College is the second oldest community
11college in Illinois; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Morton College has evolved from its humble
13beginnings on the third floor at Morton East High School to its
14current campus in Cicero, allowing the college to have served
15more than a quarter of a million students across Berwyn,
16Cicero, Forest View, Lyons, McCook, and Stickney; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Morton College is committed to its mission of
18enhancing the quality of life of its diverse community through
19providing exemplary teaching and learning opportunities,
20recognizing the value of community service, and promoting
21life-long learning; and

1    WHEREAS, Morton College strives to prepare leaders in all
2walks of life by offering opportunities for career advancement
3through six degree programs, 37 certificate programs, and a
4pathway to transfer to a university for a four-year degree;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Morton College provides programming in the arts,
7theater, music, and athletics to foster creativity and unity
8throughout the region; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Morton College is committed to educational
10innovation through its university transfer program and
11expansion of educational opportunities to include career,
12community, and adult education programs that serve all ages
13from eight to 88; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Morton College graduates have served their
15communities as elected officials, as police and firefighters,
16and as educators; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Morton College graduates provide valuable care
18for their communities as nurses, physical therapist
19assistants, and doctors; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Morton College graduates improve the quality of

1life for their community members through vital car and heating
2systems repairs, maintenance of our information superhighway,
3and through the local businesses they have built to meet the
4needs of our families; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Morton College graduates bring neighbors together
6through their talents in college and professional sports,
7music, television, news, and movies; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Morton College recently started the 2024-2025
9academic year with over 5,500 students and the announcement of
10exciting new exterior campus renovations that will enhance the
11student experience; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Morton
14College on the 100th anniversary of its founding; and be it
15further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to Morton College President Dr. Keith McLaughlin as
18a symbol of our respect and esteem.
