SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Dorothy Kathryn Engholdt Bertschy of
4Peoria, who passed away on September 13, 2024; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dorothy Bertschy was born to Henry C. and
6Gabriella Kraus Engholdt in Fon du Lac, Wisconsin on June 9,
71928; she graduated from the University of Wisconsin in
8Madison in 1950, where she served on the student board and was
9a member of Alpha Kappa Delta honorary society; she received a
10piano teaching certification from Sherwood Music School in
11Chicago and later did graduate study at Bradley University;
12she also completed requirements for secondary school
13certification; she married Adelbert Louis "Del" Bertschy in
14Fon du Lac, Wisconsin on July 29, 1950; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Dorothy Bertschy taught in South Holland School
16District 150 for several years and gave private piano lessons
17to children; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Dorothy Bertschy was a member of St. Thomas
19Catholic Church since 1956, where she was active in parish,
20scouts, and school activities and was a founder of the
21school's fine arts program; she was a member of Mt. Hawley
22Country Club, where she served as chairman of the Ladies 18

1Golf League; she was president of the Amateur Musical Club
2from 1981 to 1987, served as chairwoman of the Docents at
3Lakeview Museum, and was a member of the Presenters' Panel of
4the Illinois Arts Council; she served as president of the Fine
5Arts Society from 1987 to 1989 and as president and founder of
6the Amateur Musical Club Foundation; she was a director of the
7Halbert and Alice Kadish Foundation of Milwaukee; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Dorothy Bertschy served on the boards of the
9American Association of University Women, the Society of
10Engineers Wives, the Muses of Lakeview Museum, the Peoria Arts
11and Sciences Council, the Women's Civic Federation, the WCBU
12Development Advisory Board, the Bergan High School Parents
13Association, and the Seminarian Support Group of the Catholic
14Diocese of Peoria; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Dorothy Bertschy received the Julia Proctor White
16Arts Achievement Award at the YWCA Leadership luncheon in
171993; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Dorothy Bertschy enjoyed playing tennis, golf,
19and bridge, swimming, reading, gardening, playing the piano,
20entertaining friends and family at her home, and traveling
21domestically and internationally with her husband; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Dorothy Bertschy was an active homemaker, mother,

1and grandmother, always hoping to be a positive influence on
2her family members; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Dorothy Bertschy was preceded in death by her
4parents; her husband; and her brothers, Thomas H. Engholdt and
51st Lt. James M. Engholdt; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Dorothy Bertschy is survived by her sons, Timothy
7(Janet), Nicholas (Lucinda Uphoff), and Christopher (Nancy),
8and seven grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
10ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
11Dorothy Kathryn Engholdt Bertschy and extend our sincere
12condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved
13her; and be it further
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15presented to the family of Dorothy Bertschy as an expression
16of our deepest sympathy.
