SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Leila Mae Clay, beloved family
4matriarch; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Leila Clay was born to Levi and Esther (Steagall)
6Wood in Newnan, Georgia on October 11, 1932; she married
7Lonnie Clay in July 1950, and they lived in Okinawa, Japan and
8Franfurt, Germany during his time of service in the U.S. Army
9before moving to Chicago in 1960 following his discharge; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Leila Clay worked for the U.S. Postal Service,
11retiring after decades of service; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Leila Clay was deeply committed to her faith and
13a longtime member of Alpha Temple Missionary Baptist Church;
14she was also an active member of the community and served as
15Treasure of 77th Wood Street Block club; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Leila Clay was a model of self-sufficiency,
17maintaining her home and independence into her 90s; she was a
18life-long learner and enjoyed serving others and spending
19quality time with family, helping organize numerous family
20reunions in Washington D.C., Chicago, Newnan, Georgia, and
21Atlanta, Georgia; and

1    WHEREAS, Leila Clay was preceded in death by her parents;
2her husband; and her siblings, Lucille (James) McCombs, Sara
3(Arthur Lee) Berry, and J.C. (Suzette) Wood; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Leila Clay is survived by her sons, Larry
5(Sylvia) Clay and Randy (Analilia) Clay; her grandchildren,
6Erick D. (Leslie) Clay, Randy L. (Lashawn) Clay, Edward C.
7(Helen) Clay, Jeremy Henley, Tiffani L. Clay, Melissa Clay
8(Theresa) Barnes, and Lonnie Clay III; her
9great-grandchildren, Justin J. Clay, Ethan D. Clay, Gabrielle
10Clay, Camille Clay, Randy L. Clay Jr., Eric Delahoussaye,
11Heaven Delahoussaye, Angel Delahoussaye, Sydney Clay, Dexter
12Delahoussaye, Edward C. Clay I, Helyn Clay, Hannah Clay,
13Edward C. Clay Jr., Layla S. Henley, Jordyn W. Henley, Jeremy
14D. Henley, Natalya A. Clay, and Juliana Clay; her
15great-great-granddaughter, Parker R. Clay; and her sister,
16Ruth (Robert) Sutton; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
18ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
19Leila Mae Clay and extend our sincere condolences to her
20family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
21further
 
22    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
