| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
| 3 | | to learn of the death of Larry Shapiro, who passed away on |
| 4 | | September 8, 2024 at the age of 79; and |
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Larry Shapiro was known throughout Proviso |
| 6 | | Township for his work mobilizing community members to improve |
| 7 | | their surroundings, including coordinating a senior club, |
| 8 | | rejuvenating the township's jazz scene, and organizing a |
| 9 | | winning slate of reform-minded school district and library |
| 10 | | board candidates; and |
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Larry Shapiro was a former English teacher who |
| 12 | | taught at South Shore International College Preparatory High |
| 13 | | School on Chicago's South Side; he was loved by many |
| 14 | | generations of students, some of whom even played a role in |
| 15 | | their former teacher's post-retirement while he flourished in |
| 16 | | the suburbs; and |
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Larry Shapiro served as chief of staff for |
| 18 | | then-State Representative Karen Yarbrough, and he later |
| 19 | | transitioned to serving as communications director for former |
| 20 | | Maywood Mayor Henderson Yarbrough; after concluding his time |
| 21 | | with Mayor Yarbrough, he served as a suburban representative |
| 22 | | for Congressman Danny K. Davis; and |

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Larry Shapiro saw his time with Mayor Yarbrough |
| 2 | | as an opportunity to help connect Maywood residents to their |
| 3 | | government, and he did so by creating the Maywood News and |
| 4 | | helping found the Coffee with the Mayor program, both of which |
| 5 | | promoted the visibility, accessibility, and interactivity of |
| 6 | | Maywood's government; and |
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Larry Shapiro used his time as communications |
| 8 | | director to launch initiatives highlighting successful young |
| 9 | | people within District 88 and 89 schools by establishing the |
| 10 | | Honor Roll Reception, which honored all students in Maywood |
| 11 | | who made the honor roll; he also took time to recognize the |
| 12 | | most-improved students during board meetings to encourage |
| 13 | | those who had not yet made the honor roll to push themselves |
| 14 | | further academically; and |
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Larry Shapiro helped develop the concept that |
| 16 | | served as the model for revolutionizing his township's senior |
| 17 | | club; his work for the senior club helped bolster membership |
| 18 | | and ensured the establishment of regular club meetings, which |
| 19 | | featured special guests and provided free legal and healthcare |
| 20 | | services, lunches, and various other community resources; and |
| 21 | | WHEREAS, Larry Shapiro revived Maywood's jazz scene by |
| 22 | | hosting bimonthly jazz nights at a local restaurant, helping |

| 1 | | attract music lovers from all over the Chicagoland area, |
| 2 | | including world-class musicians, to Maywood; and |
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Larry Shapiro also helped revolutionize Bellwood |
| 4 | | School District 88 and Bellwood Public Library Boards by |
| 5 | | drafting a slate of individuals who were intent on reform and |
| 6 | | leadership, thus promoting both; and |
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Larry Shapiro's advocacy work won him much |
| 8 | | recognition over the years, including a Village Heritage Award |
| 9 | | from nonprofit Operation Uplift in Maywood; and |
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Larry Shapiro will be remembered for the |
| 11 | | countless students and residents he inspired, whose lives he |
| 12 | | helped transform into something greater; therefore, be it |
| 13 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL |
| 14 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
| 15 | | Larry Shapiro and extend our sincere condolences to his |
| 16 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
| 17 | | further |
| 18 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 19 | | presented to the family of Larry Shapiro as an expression of |
| 20 | | our deepest sympathy. |
