SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
105 ILCS 5/2-3.119a

    Amends the School Code. Provides that the State Board of Education shall compile and disseminate annually a list of Illinois organizations offering externships, internships, and volunteer opportunities to young women in the fields of science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Provides that each school board shall post the list disseminated by the State Board of Education in a location easily accessible to students.

1    AN ACT concerning education.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing Section
52-3.119a as follows:
 
6    (105 ILCS 5/2-3.119a)
7    Sec. 2-3.119a. School STEAM Grant Program.
8    (a) The State Board of Education shall administer the
9School STEAM Grant Program from the funds appropriated from
10the School STEAM Grant Program Fund for the purpose of making
11science, technology, engineering, art, and math programming
12available to low-income students in disadvantaged
13neighborhoods. School STEAM grants shall be made available to
14public schools, charter schools, area vocational centers, and
15laboratory schools in which the percentage of students
16classified as low income exceeds the State average. Grant
17recipients shall use grant proceeds to conduct, or contract
18with a third party to conduct, programming that educates,
19encourages, and promotes obtaining skills and career
20opportunities in the fields of science, technology,
21engineering, art, and math. Priority shall be given to
22programs that provide hands-on experience and programs that
23focus on promoting young women to enter into the fields of

1science, technology, engineering, art, and math.
2    The State Board of Education shall compile and disseminate
3annually a list of Illinois organizations offering
4externships, internships, and volunteer opportunities to young
5women in the fields of science, technology, engineering, art,
6and math. Each school board shall post the list disseminated
7by the State Board of Education in a location easily
8accessible to students.
9    (b) The State Board of Education may adopt all rules
10necessary for the implementation and administration of the
11STEAM Grant Program, including, but not limited to, rules
12defining application procedures and prescribing a mechanism
13for disbursing grant funds if requests exceed available funds.
14    (c) There is created in the State treasury the School
15STEAM Grant Program Fund. The State Board shall have the
16authority to make expenditures from the Fund pursuant to
17appropriations made for the purposes of this Section. There
18shall be deposited into the Fund such amounts, including, but
19not limited to:
20        (1) transfers from the State Lottery Fund pursuant to
21    Section 21.12 of the Illinois Lottery Law; and
22        (2) any appropriations, grants, or gifts made to the
23    Fund.
