HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Samuel
4W. "Sam" Nolen of Springfield, who passed away on March 5,
52025; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Sam Nolen was born in West Frankfort to Sam and
7Daisy (Odle) Nolen on October 28, 1934; he married Valeria
8Meyersick on June 23, 1963; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Sam Nolen's career began as a trooper in 1961
10when he graduated first in Cadet Class #28 from the Illinois
11State Police Academy; he served in a number of positions,
12including Director for the Office of Operations Support and
13Planning (1975-1977), Assistant Deputy Director for the
14Division of Forensic Services and Identification (1977-1978),
15Deputy Director for the Division of Training (1978-1981),
16Deputy Director for the Division of Forensic Services and
17Identification (1981-1987), and as the First Deputy Director
18(1987-1991); and
 
19    WHEREAS, Sam Nolen was appointed to serve as the Acting
20Director of ISP during the transition of gubernatorial
21administrations from Governor Thompson to Governor Edgar from
22January to March of 1991; he received the call to serve again

1when he was appointed by Governor George Ryan to serve as the
2Director of ISP in January of 1999, a position in which he
3served from 1999 until his retirement in 2003; he made a
4lasting impact on District 14, the ISP, and with those he
5served; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Sam Nolen enjoyed fishing, reading, and watching
7the news; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Sam Nolen was preceded in death by his parents
9and his wife, Valeria; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Sam Nolen is survived by his son, Brent (Kim)
11Nolen; his grandchildren, Trent (Emily) Nolen and Amanda
12(Brody) Snyder; his great-granddaughter, Nina Nolen; two
13brothers; one sister; and several nieces and nephews;
14therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
16HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
17we mourn the passing of Samuel W. "Sam" Nolen and extend our
18sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew
19and loved him; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to the family of Sam Nolen as an expression of our
