HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Veterans of Foreign Wars
4(VFW) Post 1337 of Mount Prospect on the occasion of its 100th
5anniversary; and
 
6    WHEREAS, For 100 years, VFW Post 1337 has been advocating
7for veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces in personal and
8political matters, providing camaraderie for returning
9military personnel and their families while serving as a
10community organization through its volunteer work; and
 
11    WHEREAS, VFW Post 1337, built by locally skilled tradesmen
12and craftsmen who were veterans of World Wars I and II in the
13post-war years of 1949 and 1950, was created as a location for
14veterans to share their service-related connections and
15memories, to commemorate the past, and to have a place of
16belonging; and
 
17    WHEREAS, VFW Post 1337 has been presented with the status
18of All-American Post, a prestigious recognition given by the
19national VFW organization for member participation in VFW
20programs and for growth in membership numbers, for six years
21in a row; and

1    WHEREAS, In 1899, the VFW of the United States was founded
2by veterans of the Spanish-American War and the Philippine
3Insurrection as a loose association of many smaller local
4veterans' organizations in order to secure rights and benefits
5for their service, as many of these veterans arrived home sick
6or wounded without long-term medical care options or a
7veterans' pension to sustain themselves; and
 
8    WHEREAS, National and local VFW chapters have been
9instrumental in advocating for veterans and service members'
10rights on the county, state, and national levels, such as the
11creation of the G.I. Bills in the 20th and 21st centuries,
12expanding educational benefits for service members, increasing
13healthcare accessibility for Vietnam veterans exposed to Agent
14Orange and Gulf War veterans diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome,
15and championing for the inclusion and recognition of female
16veterans; and
 
17    WHEREAS, National and local VFW posts have been
18responsible for securing the funding towards the creation of
19the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Korean War Veterans
20Memorial, the World War II Memorial, and the Military Women's
21Memorial to recognize the warriors of the past, preserving
22their stories and sacrifices for the benefit of future
23generations; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
2HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3we congratulate Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 1337 of
4Mount Prospect on its 100th anniversary; and be it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6presented to Post Commander Les Durov of VFW Post 1337 as an
7expression of our esteem and respect.
