| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives wish to congratulate Tim Smith on the occasion | ||||||
| 4 | of receiving the 2025 Annual Historical Preservation Award | ||||||
| 5 | from the Illiana Genealogical & Historical Society Foundation; | ||||||
| 6 | and | ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, The Illiana Genealogical & Historical Society | ||||||
| 8 | Foundation, located at 215 West North Street in Danville, aims | ||||||
| 9 | to promote and preserve local and family history of the | ||||||
| 10 | Illiana area as well as to make it more accessible to the | ||||||
| 11 | public; to achieve this, the foundation annually recognizes a | ||||||
| 12 | deserving individual who has made significant contributions to | ||||||
| 13 | preserve local history; and | ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, Tim Smith, the sixth honoree to receive the | ||||||
| 15 | Annual Historical Preservation Award, graduated from Urbana | ||||||
| 16 | High School, received an undergraduate degree in history from | ||||||
| 17 | the University of Illinois, and earned his Juris Doctor from | ||||||
| 18 | the University of Illinois College of Law; he was married to | ||||||
| 19 | the late Jane Dighton Smith, a longtime elementary school | ||||||
| 20 | teacher in the Danville schools, and they have one daughter, | ||||||
| 21 | Jessica Smith Diel; and | ||||||
| 22 | WHEREAS, Tim Smith served as a judge advocate in the U.S. | ||||||

| 1 | Navy; he then worked as an attorney in private practice in | ||||||
| 2 | Danville starting in 1977, first in general practice before | ||||||
| 3 | later specializing in business and real estate transactions, | ||||||
| 4 | banking, wills, and trusts; he retired in 2010; and | ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Tim Smith has been named to receive the Annual | ||||||
| 6 | Historical Preservation Award for his active participation | ||||||
| 7 | over the years in preserving Vermilion County and Central | ||||||
| 8 | Illinois histories, primarily in researching the life and | ||||||
| 9 | career of Danville's Joseph G. "Uncle Joe" Cannon, the | ||||||
| 10 | legendary Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from | ||||||
| 11 | 1903 until 1911 who ultimately held a 46-year tenure in the | ||||||
| 12 | House; and | ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, Tim Smith has devoted many hours of research and | ||||||
| 14 | written multiple articles and essays on Uncle Joe Cannon and | ||||||
| 15 | has given numerous presentations to varied groups in the | ||||||
| 16 | community about Cannon and local history, and he was involved | ||||||
| 17 | in the effort to name the Vermilion County Courthouse Annex in | ||||||
| 18 | honor of Cannon; he has also written on other topics of local | ||||||
| 19 | historical interest, and he has been a featured writer in | ||||||
| 20 | several issues of the Vermilion County Museum Society's | ||||||
| 21 | quarterly magazine, The Heritage; and | ||||||
| 22 | WHEREAS, Tim Smith will be honored at the Illiana | ||||||
| 23 | Genealogical & Historical Society Foundation's 2025 Annual | ||||||

| 1 | Historical Preservation Award Banquet on April 29, 2025; | ||||||
| 2 | therefore, be it | ||||||
| 3 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 4 | HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 5 | we congratulate Tim Smith on receiving the 2025 Annual | ||||||
| 6 | Historical Preservation Award from the Illiana Genealogical & | ||||||
| 7 | Historical Society Foundation; and be it further | ||||||
| 8 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 9 | presented to Tim Smith as an expression of our esteem and | ||||||
| 10 | respect. | ||||||
