HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), also known as
3chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), is a complex, debilitating
4neurological and immunological disease that affects millions
5worldwide, including an estimated two to three million people
6in the United States; and
 
7    WHEREAS, ME/CFS is characterized by profound fatigue,
8post-exertional malaise, a worsening of symptoms after even
9minor exertion, cognitive impairment "brain fog", chronic
10pain, immune dysfunction, dizziness, and a range of other
11disabling symptoms that significantly reduce quality of life;
12and
 
13    WHEREAS, ME/CFS can affect individuals of all ages,
14genders, and backgrounds, often leaving patients bedridden or
15housebound for years or even a lifetime, with only a small
16percentage achieving full recovery; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Scientific research has demonstrated that ME/CFS
18is a serious, multi-system disease, yet it remains
19underfunded, under-researched, and widely misunderstood,
20contributing to significant delays in diagnosis, limited
21treatment options, and ongoing stigma for patients; and

1    WHEREAS, Over 65 million people worldwide, including those
2suffering from long COVID and other post-viral conditions, now
3face similar challenges, highlighting the urgent need for
4increased biomedical research, healthcare provider education,
5and public awareness of infection-associated chronic
6conditions; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The economic impact of ME/CFS in the U.S. alone
8is estimated to be in the hundreds of billions of dollars
9annually due to lost productivity, medical costs, and the need
10for full-time caregiving; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Recognizing ME/CFS and related conditions as
12serious public health concerns will help accelerate research
13funding, improve clinical care, and promote policies that
14support affected individuals and their families; therefore, be
15it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
17HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
18we declare May 12, 2025 as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic
19Fatigue Syndrome Awareness Day in the State of Illinois in
20recognition of the millions of people living with ME/CFS and
21related post-infectious diseases; and be it further
