HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Parkinson's disease is a chronic, progressive,
3neurological disease and is the second most common
4neurodegenerative disease in the United States; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Parkinson's disease is estimated to affect
6approximately one million people in the United States, and the
7prevalence will rise to 1.2 million by 2030; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Each year, 90,000 people in the United States are
9newly diagnosed with Parkinson's disease; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Parkinson's disease is the 14th leading cause of
11death in the United States according to the Centers for
12Disease Control and Prevention; and
 
13    WHEREAS, The economic burden of Parkinson's disease is
14estimated to be at least $52 billion annually, including
15direct and indirect costs, which include treatment, social
16security payments, and lost income to patients and family
17members; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Research suggests the cause of Parkinson's
19disease is a combination of genetic and environmental factors,
20but the exact cause and progression of the disease is still

1unknown; and
 
2    WHEREAS, There is no objective test or biomarker for
3Parkinson's disease, and there is no cure or drug to slow or
4halt the progression of the disease; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The symptoms of Parkinson's disease vary from
6person to person and can include tremors, slowness of movement
7and rigidity, difficulty with balance, swallowing, chewing,
8and speaking, cognitive impairment and dementia, mood
9disorders, and a variety of other non-motor symptoms; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Volunteers, researchers, caregivers, and medical
11professionals are working to improve the quality of life of
12persons living with Parkinson's disease and their families;
13and
 
14    WHEREAS, Increased research, education, and community
15support services, such as those provided by the Parkinson's
16Foundation and other organizations, are needed to find more
17effective treatments and to provide access to quality care to
18those living with the disease today; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
20HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
21we declare April of 2025 as Parkinson's Awareness Month in the
