HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Tom Miller on his
4retirement from WJPF News Radio after nearly 50 years on the
5air; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Tom Miller is a lifelong resident of Southern
7Illinois from Harrisburg, where he has been delivering news
8and entertainment on the radio to the people of Southern
9Illinois for decades; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Tom Miller began his career as a music DJ in 1976
11before eventually moving into news; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Tom Miller has been the host of the WJPF Morning
13Newswatch on news radio in addition to serving as the program
14director for WJPF and WCIL-AM, and he has also served as
15operations manager for River Radio and its six regional
16stations; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Under Tom Miller's leadership, WJPF has received
18the Medium Market Station of the Year award and the Best Public
19Service Program award from the Illinois Broadcasters
20Association; and

1    WHEREAS, Tom Miller received the Leaders Among Us Award
2from the Southern Illinoisan newspaper and the Seven Seals
3Award from the Illinois National Guard for his work supporting
4local service members; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Known for his humility, Tom Miller rarely drew
6attention to himself but instead highlighted others;
7throughout his career, he interviewed political leaders and
8community members from across the state and around the nation;
9and
 
10    WHEREAS, Tom Miller has demonstrated significant civic
11engagement by previously serving on the board of trustees of
12the Bald Knob Cross of Peace and running for Williamson County
13Board of Commissioners in addition to his interviews with
14political leaders and community members; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Tom Miller has hosted politicians, sports
16figures, rock and roll legends, community leaders, medical
17professionals, and members of every other profession in
18between as the anchor of WJPF Radio's Morning Newswatch
19program; and
 
20    WHEREAS, The people of Southern Illinois will surely miss
21Tom Miller's insightful interviews, commentary, and unmatched
22personality from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM Monday through Friday; and

1    WHEREAS, Tom Miller's nearly 50 years of service to the
2radio industry in Southern Illinois has made him the region's
3top radio news anchorman; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Tom Miller will especially be remembered for his
5journalistic wisdom; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
7HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8we congratulate Tom Miller on his retirement, and we thank him
9for his nearly five decades of dedicated service to the people
10and communities of Southern Illinois as he has been a strong
11and steady voice guiding the region through good times and
12bad; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
14presented to Tom Miller and River Radio as a token of our
15esteem and respect.
