HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, For 250 years, the United States Postal Service
3(USPS) has bound this nation together; and
 
4    WHEREAS, The USPS delivers prescriptions to seniors and
5veterans, ballots to voters, and shipments for small
6businesses and provides reliable service to rural and remote
7areas, including many indigenous communities, where private
8companies often refuse service because it is not profitable;
9and
 
10    WHEREAS, Only the USPS serves every ZIP code and every
11household, regardless of geography or income; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The USPS faces renewed threats of privatization,
13which would mean jobs eliminated, closed post offices, and
14higher rates, and the loss of universal service at affordable
15rates to all ZIP codes would devastate families, local
16economies, and entire communities; and
 
17    WHEREAS, People have demonstrated how strongly they oppose
18privatization, including a grassroots effort that has sent
19more than half a million letters to Congress demanding
20protection of the USPS; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
2HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3we affirm that the United States Postal Service is a public
4service that belongs to the people and oppose any effort to
5dismantle, privatize, or weaken this vital institution; and be
6it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8delivered to U.S. Postmaster General David Steiner.
