HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Derrick Martell Rose on
4the retirement of his jersey by the Chicago Bulls on January
524, 2026, an honor reserved for the most iconic figures in the
6history of one of the world's most renowned sports franchises;
7and
 
8    WHEREAS, Derrick Rose was born in Chicago on October 4,
91988, and he was raised on the South Side of Chicago, where his
10journey from neighborhood courts and Chicago Public Schools to
11international basketball stardom became a powerful symbol of
12perseverance, discipline, and possibility for young people
13across this State; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Derrick Rose attended Beasley Academic Center,
15where he first developed the foundation of his academic and
16athletic life, before continuing his education and basketball
17career at Simeon Career Academy, which hosts one of Chicago's
18most storied basketball programs; and
 
19    WHEREAS, At Simeon Career Academy, Derrick Rose led his
20team to a Chicago Public League championship and emerged as
21one of the nation's premier high school basketball players,
22exemplifying leadership, humility, and competitive excellence

1while representing his school and community with distinction;
2and
 
3    WHEREAS, After a standout collegiate season at the
4University of Memphis, Derrick Rose was selected first overall
5in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls, returning home to
6represent his city at the highest level of professional
7basketball; and
 
8    WHEREAS, In 2011, at just 22 years old, Derrick Rose
9became the youngest player in NBA history to be named the
10league's Most Valuable Player, leading the Chicago Bulls to
11the best regular-season record in the NBA and restoring
12national prominence to the franchise; and
 
13    WHEREAS, During his career, Derrick Rose was named a
14three-time NBA All-Star, an All-NBA First Team selection pick,
15and the 2009 NBA Rookie of the Year, earning league-wide
16respect for his electrifying style of play, quiet leadership,
17and unwavering work ethic; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Despite enduring significant injuries that
19altered the trajectory of his career, Derrick Rose
20demonstrated extraordinary resilience and character,
21continuing to compete at the highest level of professional
22basketball and redefining success through perseverance,

1adaptability, and grace; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Beyond his accomplishments on the court, Derrick
3Rose has remained deeply connected to the City of Chicago,
4using his platform to support youth, education, and community
5development, and he has continued to serve as an enduring
6inspiration to generations of Chicagoans; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The retirement of Derrick Rose's jersey
8represents not only athletic excellence but also the enduring
9bond between a city and one of its own, a Chicago Public
10Schools graduate who carried the values of his community with
11him wherever he played; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
13HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14we congratulate Derrick Martell Rose on the retirement of his
15jersey by the Chicago Bulls in recognition of his remarkable
16life and career, and we thank him for his lasting
17contributions to the City of Chicago, the State of Illinois,
18and the game of basketball; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to Derrick Rose as an expression of our esteem and
21admiration.
