HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Footwork is a dynamic, influential cultural art
3form that was born in the neighborhoods of Illinois and shaped
4by the creativity and resilience of Black youth on the South
5and West Sides of Chicago; and
 
6    WHEREAS, This unique dance form, known for its fast-paced,
7intricate foot movement and improvisational style, has grown
8into a global artistic movement while remaining deeply
9connected to its roots in the communities of Illinois; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Footwork has served as a powerful platform for
11creative expression, youth empowerment, and community unity,
12offering an outlet that fosters discipline, self-confidence,
13and positive identity among young people; and
 
14    WHEREAS, For decades, footwork artists, musicians, and
15educators across the State have contributed to its
16preservation and growth through mentorship, workshops,
17performances, and international collaborations; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The initiative to officially recognize and
19celebrate this cultural legacy through Footwork Appreciation
20Month is being led by the Creative Netwerk, the website
21ChicagoFootwork.com, and community leader Jeremy Young,

1entities that continue to elevate the voices of local artists
2and advocate for greater support of homegrown cultural
3traditions; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Honoring footwork on a statewide level affirms
5the importance of community-based art, the enduring legacy of
6Black cultural innovation in Illinois, and the role of
7creative expression in strengthening civic life; therefore, be
8it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
10HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
11we declare August 2026 as Footwork Appreciation Month in the
12State of Illinois; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That we encourage state agencies, educational
14institutions, community organizations, and the public at large
15to recognize, celebrate, and support footwork as an essential
16and vibrant part of the cultural heritage of Illinois.
