HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Footwork is a dynamic, influential cultural art form that was born in the neighborhoods of Illinois and shaped by the creativity and resilience of Black youth on the South and West Sides of Chicago; and

WHEREAS, This unique dance form, known for its fast-paced, intricate foot movement and improvisational style, has grown into a global artistic movement while remaining deeply connected to its roots in the communities of Illinois; and

WHEREAS, Footwork has served as a powerful platform for creative expression, youth empowerment, and community unity, offering an outlet that fosters discipline, self-confidence, and positive identity among young people; and

WHEREAS, For decades, footwork artists, musicians, and educators across the State have contributed to its preservation and growth through mentorship, workshops, performances, and international collaborations; and

WHEREAS, The initiative to officially recognize and celebrate this cultural legacy through Footwork Appreciation Month is being led by the Creative Netwerk, the website ChicagoFootwork.com, and community leader Jeremy Young, entities that continue to elevate the voices of local artists and advocate for greater support of homegrown cultural traditions; and

WHEREAS, Honoring footwork on a statewide level affirms the importance of community-based art, the enduring legacy of Black cultural innovation in Illinois, and the role of creative expression in strengthening civic life; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare August 2026 as Footwork Appreciation Month in the State of Illinois; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we encourage state agencies, educational institutions, community organizations, and the public at large to recognize, celebrate, and support footwork as an essential and vibrant part of the cultural heritage of Illinois.
