HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, More than 55 years ago, January was designated as
3National Blood Donor Month as an annual observance to honor
4voluntary blood donors and to encourage more people to donate
5blood at a time when blood supplies are historically low; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Blood donations are the backbone of Illinois'
7health care; every two seconds, someone needs a blood
8transfusion, but blood cannot be manufactured and is only made
9possible by generous donors who roll up their sleeves to help
10save lives; and
 
11    WHEREAS, The Illinois population is aging, and too few new
12donors are volunteering to take the place of those unable to
13donate any longer; only about 3% of the age-eligible
14population donates blood, but patient needs are constant; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Type O blood is often used in trauma situations,
16making it the most needed blood type and most likely to be in
17short supply during a blood emergency; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Patients requiring blood transfusions include
19cancer patients, accident, burn, and trauma victims, newborn
20babies and their mothers, transplant recipients, surgery
21patients, chronically transfused patients suffering from

1sickle cell disease or thalassemia, and many more; therefore,
2be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
4HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
5we declare January 2026 as Blood Donor Month in the State of
6Illinois; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That we urge all citizens to celebrate the cause
8of blood donation and to recognize the lifesaving
9contributions of volunteer blood donors; and be it further
 
10    RESOLVED, That we urge all eligible blood donors to donate
11regularly and for businesses and organizations throughout the
12State of Illinois to sponsor community blood drives with
13ImpactLife, Rock River Valley Blood Center, Versiti, and
14Vitalant, among other blood centers, providing residents of
15our State the opportunity to save lives.
