HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, In the first weeks of 2026, President Donald J. Trump has declared himself "acting president of Venezuela", threatened unprovoked military action in Cuba and Iran, and suggested that his failure to earn a Nobel Peace Prize frees him to forcefully pursue "complete and total control" of the peaceful and autonomous territory of Greenland; and

WHEREAS, At no point has President Trump sought or been granted authorization by the United States Congress for military actions; and

WHEREAS, While President Trump sold himself as a "peace president" who would keep America out of unnecessary foreign conflicts in order to provide for people in need domestically, the reality of his administration has been marked by needless provocation, alienation of our allies, and severe cuts to the social safety net at home; and

WHEREAS, The cost of President Trump's military operations in Venezuela could fund SNAP benefits for more than 310,000 Americans; and

WHEREAS, The amount of money President Trump has publicly committed to obtaining "complete and total control" over Greenland would cover the cost of the Affordable Care Act subsidies he let expire and the cost of the state childcare funding he froze, and there would still be more than $550 billion left over; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we reject President Donald J. Trump's efforts to acquire territories and titles overseas, while leaving working families at home to pay the bill; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we call upon the United States Congress to intervene and provide the constitutional oversight necessary to hold President Trump accountable to the American people.
