HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Daviyae
4Keimar Shotwell, who passed away on January 9, 2026; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Daviyae Shotwell was born to LaTanya Denise
6Cobbins and Dwayne Shotwell in Chicago on March 21, 2008; he
7was christened at True Freedom Church, and he later attended
8New Life Covenant Church with his mother; he attended Les
9Finch Learning Tree and Holy Family School before continuing
10his academic journey at LaSalle Language Academy, where he
11studied French and graduated with honors; he then attended
12Noble Street College Prep High School, where he was a senior
13and eagerly looking forward to the many opportunities that lay
14ahead; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Daviyae Shotwell lived with sickle cell disease
16but refused to allow the disease to define his ability to
17thrive; throughout his childhood, he remained actively
18involved in sports and extracurricular activities,
19demonstrating remarkable determination and resilience; he
20played basketball from first through third grade, joined an
21inner-city education program in 2019, where he had the
22opportunity to learn and practice ice hockey for three years,
23and became a member of the Hillside Youth Bowling League in

12021; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Daviyae Shotwell was exceptionally intelligent,
3becoming a champion chess player and developing a deep love
4for music; he found great joy in rapping, using it as another
5way to express his creativity and spirit; he also enjoyed
6constructing humorous sayings that were often quoted by others
7and cooking meals for his family and friends; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Daviyae Shotwell was affectionately known by many
9nicknames, including "Diggy", "Duke", "Mr. Smell Good", and
10"Brudda", to name a few; he was a devoted son, brother, nephew,
11and uncle and a true protector of children, possessing a
12special heart for those with differences, showing them
13patience, care, and genuine compassion; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Daviyae Shotwell was preceded in death by his
15grandfathers, Luster V. Davis and Derrek Bernard; his uncle,
16Erick Shotwell; and his special aunt, Cheresse Cobbins; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Daviyae Shotwell is survived by his parents; his
18siblings, Jahnaja "Kueen" Martin, SuJuan Shotwell, and Maurkel
19"Rick" Gills; his nephews and niece, Chanzelor Walker,
20Lavontae Harris, and Cali Harris; his grandmothers, Minnie
21Cobbins and Barbara Shotwell; his godfather, Jerome Davis; his
22godsister, Shamiah Hines; his best friends, Jaezeon Johnson

1and Antwon Lewis; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, and
2friends; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
4HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
5we mourn the passing of Daviyae Keimar Shotwell and extend our
6sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew
7and loved him; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to the family of Daviyae Shotwell as an expression
10of our deepest sympathy.
