| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate Abbey Murphy on winning |
| 4 | | an Olympic Gold Medal with the United States Women's Olympic |
| 5 | | Hockey Team at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, |
| 6 | | Italy; and |
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Abbey Murphy is a native of Evergreen Park and a |
| 8 | | graduate of Mother McAuley High School and has reached the |
| 9 | | pinnacle of athletic achievement; and |
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Abbey Murphy's part in this historic victory was |
| 11 | | secured on February 19, 2026 in a thrilling 2-1 overtime win |
| 12 | | against rival Canada, marking the first gold medal for Team |
| 13 | | USA in women's hockey since 2018 and only the third in the |
| 14 | | program's history; and |
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Abbey Murphy's journey to a gold medal began in |
| 16 | | the south suburbs, where she played as the only girl on a team |
| 17 | | of boys for the St. Jude Knights Hockey Club in Crestwood and |
| 18 | | later spent eight years with the Chicago Mission youth team, |
| 19 | | developing the gritty and tough playing mentality that has |
| 20 | | become her trademark; and |
| 21 | | WHEREAS, Abbey Murphy, a veteran of the 2022 silver medal |

| 1 | | team, returned to the Olympic stage as a "hockey unicorn", |
| 2 | | uniquely blending elite offensive skill with a tenacious, |
| 3 | | gritty style of play that earned her the reputation as a "game |
| 4 | | changer" and a "pest" whom opponents found impossible to |
| 5 | | ignore; and |
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Abbey Murphy was a vital offensive engine |
| 7 | | throughout the 2026 games, recording two goals and five |
| 8 | | assists, including a dominant performance in the 5-0 semifinal |
| 9 | | victory over Sweden; and |
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Abbey Murphy's impact was felt beyond the stat |
| 11 | | sheet through her unparalleled ability to draw penalties and |
| 12 | | disrupt opponents, as evidenced by her drawing four penalties |
| 13 | | single-handedly in a preliminary match up against Canada; and |
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Abbey Murphy continues to serve as a leader in |
| 15 | | the sport as a captain for the University of Minnesota, where |
| 16 | | she has led the nation in both goals and competitive spirit; |
| 17 | | and |
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Abbey Murphy carries the pride of her community |
| 19 | | with her every time she hits the ice, including the residents |
| 20 | | of Evergreen Park, the nearby neighborhoods of Beverly and |
| 21 | | Mount Greenwood in Chicago, and other south suburbs that |
| 22 | | rallied behind their hometown hero with watch parties and |

| 2 | | WHEREAS, Abbey Murphy has been supported in her athletic |
| 3 | | journeys by her family, including her father, Ed, who played |
| 4 | | college football, served in the U.S. Marines, and currently |
| 5 | | works as a pipefitter for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation |
| 6 | | District of Greater Chicago, her mother, Lynne, who played |
| 7 | | softball and currently works as a nurse, her brother, Patrick, |
| 8 | | who played college football, and her brother, Dominic, who was |
| 9 | | a college wrestler; therefore, be it |
| 10 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
| 11 | | HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
| 12 | | we congratulate Abbey Murphy on winning an Olympic Gold Medal |
| 13 | | and commend her for her dedication, her resilience, and the |
| 14 | | exemplary manner in which she represented the State of |
| 15 | | Illinois and the United States of America; and be it further |
| 16 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 17 | | presented to Abbey Murphy as a symbol of our esteem and pride |
| 18 | | in her remarkable accomplishments. |
