HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Abbey Murphy on winning
4an Olympic Gold Medal with the United States Women's Olympic
5Hockey Team at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina,
6Italy; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Abbey Murphy is a native of Evergreen Park and a
8graduate of Mother McAuley High School and has reached the
9pinnacle of athletic achievement; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Abbey Murphy's part in this historic victory was
11secured on February 19, 2026 in a thrilling 2-1 overtime win
12against rival Canada, marking the first gold medal for Team
13USA in women's hockey since 2018 and only the third in the
14program's history; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Abbey Murphy's journey to a gold medal began in
16the south suburbs, where she played as the only girl on a team
17of boys for the St. Jude Knights Hockey Club in Crestwood and
18later spent eight years with the Chicago Mission youth team,
19developing the gritty and tough playing mentality that has
20become her trademark; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Abbey Murphy, a veteran of the 2022 silver medal

1team, returned to the Olympic stage as a "hockey unicorn",
2uniquely blending elite offensive skill with a tenacious,
3gritty style of play that earned her the reputation as a "game
4changer" and a "pest" whom opponents found impossible to
5ignore; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Abbey Murphy was a vital offensive engine
7throughout the 2026 games, recording two goals and five
8assists, including a dominant performance in the 5-0 semifinal
9victory over Sweden; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Abbey Murphy's impact was felt beyond the stat
11sheet through her unparalleled ability to draw penalties and
12disrupt opponents, as evidenced by her drawing four penalties
13single-handedly in a preliminary match up against Canada; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Abbey Murphy continues to serve as a leader in
15the sport as a captain for the University of Minnesota, where
16she has led the nation in both goals and competitive spirit;
17and
 
18    WHEREAS, Abbey Murphy carries the pride of her community
19with her every time she hits the ice, including the residents
20of Evergreen Park, the nearby neighborhoods of Beverly and
21Mount Greenwood in Chicago, and other south suburbs that
22rallied behind their hometown hero with watch parties and

1celebrations; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Abbey Murphy has been supported in her athletic
3journeys by her family, including her father, Ed, who played
4college football, served in the U.S. Marines, and currently
5works as a pipefitter for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation
6District of Greater Chicago, her mother, Lynne, who played
7softball and currently works as a nurse, her brother, Patrick,
8who played college football, and her brother, Dominic, who was
9a college wrestler; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
11HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
12we congratulate Abbey Murphy on winning an Olympic Gold Medal
13and commend her for her dedication, her resilience, and the
14exemplary manner in which she represented the State of
15Illinois and the United States of America; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to Abbey Murphy as a symbol of our esteem and pride
18in her remarkable accomplishments.
