HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to commend Nannette Butler for devoting
4her life to advancing social justice, community service, and
5civic engagement; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Nannette Butler, a resident of Chicago's Uptown
7neighborhood in the 46th Ward, has been a dedicated leader at
8the Wilson Yard Senior Building, where she consistently
9volunteers to support fellow residents, organizes
10community-building activities, and coordinates events such as
11holiday gatherings to foster connection and mutual support
12among residents; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Nannette Butler's commitment to service is rooted
14in her lifelong dedication to civil rights, having been raised
15in a family deeply engaged in the Civil Rights Movement; and
 
16    WHEREAS, As a young girl, Nannette Butler participated in
17efforts supporting the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955 to 1956,
18organized through the Congregational Church of Park Manor in
19Chicago, by helping to prepare and send sturdy shoes from
20Chicago to Montgomery, Alabama, enabling African American
21women to walk long distances to work while boycotting
22segregated bus systems; and

1    WHEREAS, Nannette Butler contributed to Operation
2Breadbasket, an initiative led by the Reverend Jesse Jackson
3Sr., which focused on economic justice by advocating for
4employment opportunities, fair hiring practices, and
5investment in African American communities; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Nannette Butler also supported Project 75, an
7initiative aimed at increasing the number of African American
8students admitted to medical schools, helping to expand
9opportunities and representation in the medical profession;
10and
 
11    WHEREAS, Throughout her life, Nannette Butler has remained
12actively involved in faith-based and community-driven social
13justice initiatives, including numerous programs at the
14Congregational Church of Park Manor; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Nannette Butler has volunteered with ONE
16Northside, contributing to grassroots organizing efforts
17focused on equity, housing, and community empowerment in
18Chicago; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Nannette Butler has served as both a staff member
20and volunteer at Cornerstone Community Outreach, an
21Uptown-based organization dedicated to assisting individuals

1and families experiencing homelessness as they work to rebuild
2stable and independent lives; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Nannette Butler's service has extended to
4volunteering with the Child Day Center in Steger and Just
5Harvest in Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood, both of which
6are organizations that work to address hunger, poverty, and
7access to essential services; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Nannette Butler has remained a consistent and
9active presence at community events throughout Uptown and the
1046th Ward, where she donates her time to promote civic
11participation, including helping residents register to vote
12and engage in the democratic process; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Through decades of service, Nannette Butler has
14made a lasting impact on her community by strengthening
15institutions and by supporting vulnerable populations;
16therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
18HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19we commend Nannette Butler for her lifelong commitment to
20service, civil rights, and community leadership and for the
21profound and positive impact she has made in Chicago and
22beyond; and be it further

2presented to Nannette Butler as an expression of our esteem
3and respect.
