HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Guru Nanak Day is an observance dedicated to
3honoring the life and teachings of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the
4founder of Sikhism, whose message of one universal Creator,
5equality of all humanity, and selfless service continues to
6inspire millions around the world; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, born in 1469, traveled
8extensively across South Asia and the Middle East on his
9spiritual journeys, known as Udasis, during which he spread a
10universal message of love, compassion, and interfaith harmony;
11and
 
12    WHEREAS, The foundational teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji
13include Naam Japna, or remembrance of the Divine, Kirat Karni,
14or honest livelihood, and Vand Chakna, or sharing with others,
15along with the institution of Langar, a free community kitchen
16where people of every background sit and eat together as
17equals; together, these elements of Sikhism provide timeless
18guidance for living a life of equality, dignity, and service;
19and
 
20    WHEREAS, The observance of Guru Nanak Day was initiated by
21the Illinois Interfaith Organization, reflecting community
22support for its message of unity, equality, and service to

1humanity; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The Illinois Interfaith Organization successfully
3held its inaugural Guru Simran on April 26, 2026, and the
4organization has committed to continuing this Guru Simran on
5the last Sunday of every month as an ongoing tribute to the
6universal teachings of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Illinois Interfaith Organization Chairman Nauman
8Khan Azeemi has diligently promoted and educated communities
9about the significance of Guru Nanak Day, leading the
10inaugural Guru Simran and continuing to advance its message
11through interfaith initiatives; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
13HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14we declare November 29, 2026 as Guru Nanak Day in the State of
15Illinois, its inaugural observance, and we encourage all
16residents to honor the life and teachings of Sri Guru Nanak Dev
17Ji, the founder of Sikhism, and to participate in observances
18that strengthen the bonds of friendship and understanding
19among all people; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21delivered to the Illinois Interfaith Organization as a symbol
22of our respect and esteem.
