HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to commend Norm Meier for his
4lifetime of service to his country, his students, and the
5Newark community; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Mr. Meier was drafted into the United States Army
7on May 24, 1967 and honorably served his nation during the
8Vietnam War until his discharge on May 23, 1969; and
 
9    WHEREAS, While serving in the military, Mr. Meier fought
10during the Tet Offensive, the Battle of Loc Ninh, and the
11September 14, 1968 battle at Hill 222; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Mr. Meier served alongside fellow soldier Terry
13Richardson, who was posthumously awarded the Congressional
14Medal of Honor for extraordinary heroism during the Battle of
15Hill 222; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Mr. Meier was recognized by President Donald J.
17Trump during the Congressional Medal of Honor ceremony for
18Terry Richardson on March 2, 2026, bringing national attention
19to Mr. Meier's courage and service; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Mr. Meier's military decorations include the

1Purple Heart, two Bronze Star Medals, two Army Commendation
2Medals, two Unit Commendations, and the Air Medal; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Following his military service, Mr. Meier
4dedicated 31 years to Newark Community High School, where he
5taught Industrial Arts, later known as Industrial Technology,
6and Computer Aided Drafting (CAD); and
 
7    WHEREAS, Mr. Meier also devoted 25 years to coaching young
8athletes, including 17 years coaching baseball and eight years
9coaching softball; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Mr. Meier was inducted into the Newark Community
11High School Hall of Fame in 2008 and was further recognized by
12the Illinois Coaches Association as the 2008 Class 1A Softball
13Coach of the Year; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Mr. Meier and his wife, Barb, have been married
15for 53 years; they are the proud parents of Todd, Jill, and Amy
16and have nine grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
18HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19we commend and thank Norm Meier for his courageous military
20service, his decades of dedication to education and coaching,
21and his lasting impact on the Newark community; and be it
