AMENDMENT TO HOUSE RESOLUTION 939

2    AMENDMENT NO. ___. Amend House Resolution 939 by deleting
3everything after the heading and replacing it with the
4following:
 
5    "WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
6Representatives are proud to congratulate Laura Rodriguez,
7Gregory Pratt, and editor Erika Slife on receiving the 2026
8Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting for their courageous and
9impactful coverage of Operation Midway Blitz; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Through fearless investigative journalism and
11powerful storytelling published by the Chicago Tribune, Laura
12Rodriguez, Gregory Pratt, Adriana Perez, Kate Perez, Richie
13Requena, editor Erika Slife, and Tribune staff documented
14militarized immigration enforcement operations that
15traumatized immigrant families and communities across the
16Chicagoland area; and

1    WHEREAS, The Chicago Tribune's Operation Midway Blitz
2reporting exposed the fear, uncertainty, and harm experienced
3by working families while elevating the voices of residents,
4advocates, students, workers, and local communities who came
5together in resistance and solidarity; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The Pulitzer Prize Board recognized the Chicago
7Tribune's reporting "for its powerful coverage of the Trump
8administration's militarized immigration sweep of the city
9that described in vivid, muscular prose how the siege-like
10incursion of ICE agents unified Chicagoans in resistance"; and
 
11    WHEREAS, At a time when immigrant communities have too
12often been targeted, silenced, or dehumanized, the work of
13Laura Rodriguez, Gregory Pratt, and editor Erika Slife
14demonstrated the essential role journalism plays in protecting
15democracy, demanding accountability, and ensuring that the
16stories of impacted communities are not ignored; and
 
17    WHEREAS, The Chicago Tribune's coverage of Operation
18Midway Blitz helped bring national attention to the realities
19facing Latino and immigrant communities in Illinois and serves
20as an important historical record of a painful chapter that
21deeply affected families throughout the region; and

1    WHEREAS, A free and courageous press is fundamental to
2democracy and public accountability, especially when reporting
3on abuses of power and the lived experiences of vulnerable
4communities; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
6HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
7we congratulate Laura Rodriguez, Gregory Pratt, and editor
8Erika Slife on receiving the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Local
9Reporting, and we thank them for their commitment to truth,
10justice, accountability, and the people of Illinois; and be it
11further
 
12    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
13presented to Laura Rodriguez, Gregory Pratt, and Erika Slife
14as a symbol of our respect and appreciation."
